Like I told a few people In some text messages I sent after finding my deer "My big buck will live another year but a big doe didn't!!" No more story's of me and my buck this year. I said It last week that come Monday I was going to take the 1st adult doe that gave me a shot being I had 4 days left of the Mn archery deer season. I lied, It was the 2nd adult doe!! :D After getting out In the stand today for my evening hunt I had action right away In a chilly Mn evening, It was 5 degrees out. 2 doe fawns showed themselves and came down the trail and by me at 10 yards. It was tough letting them walk knowing time Isn't on my side but I did. They both were 80 to 90 pound fawns dressed I'd say, In great shape they were. Later on a big 6 point came by close and he also got the pass. Right after this I bumped my bow and off went my arrow to the ground. Ticked me off!! I usually have a Sta-Jac on my recurve (my old Sta-Jac Is shot) but haven't the last few years being I can't find the ones I like. Instead of leaving my arrow down there and using another I crawled down and got this one because I really wanted to test out the new broadhead that Russ (Kanga) let me try. My other BH's In my quiver were Snuffers (the big Snuffers). The broadhead Russ sent me Is a single bevel 220 grain Outback Supreme (Thanks Russ, your a good man my friend). It done It's job tonight. Back to the story- After crawling back up In the tree after getting my arrow out appears 4 deer 60 or so yards away. One Is running around acting weird and then I heard It grunt. I couldn't see antlers at the time but knew It was a buck doing some nosing and minor chasing. Finally they all made their way to me and the 1st one was an adult doe and the 2nd one appeared to be another adult doe which looked bigger. I then figured that I'm going to let the 1st doe go by and hope to get a crack at the 2nd one being It's bigger and also hoping I can see what this buck looks like that's doing all this grunting I'm hearing. The 1st comes by at 10 yards and stops about 20 yards away while the others are all 10 yards from me behind a bunch of brush. Here's where It gets confusing. The grunting Is still going on and I can't see antlers anywhere. The big doe that I wanted to take was slowly making her way out from behind the brush and I looked her up and down trying to find where It's antlers could've been had they already shed but couldn't see any marks anywhere. I looked at the back 2 deer too and couldn't see any antlers there either. The back 2 deer was a doe fawn and what had to be a buck that already shed his antlers. I couldn't look at his head real good but I know there was nothing there for antlers so I'm assuming they had fallen off. Anyhow the doe comes by at a fairly fast walk and I draw my recurve back and pick my spot and let the arrow fly. Everything looked absolutely perfect with where the arrow was going when all of a sudden my fletching kicked to the right way bad 2 feet or so from the deer and then bam the arrow hit. All I could think of Is what the hell Is going on this year? It appeared to me that the arrow didn't straighten out and most likely It would of hit about 2 feet In back of the lungs. I hit a small prickly ash sapling that I had clipped off about 2 feet from the ground. 30 minutes later I crawled down and looked at the spot I shot the deer and to my amazement I found blood on both sides of the trail so I knew I had 2 holes. I hit her on the right side and right away there was blood running out of her at the sight of the shot. That right there made feel pretty good but I still was nervous. 3 hours later a few of us got our lanterns fired up and went tracking. There she layed 40 yards away, lung and heart shot. Found the arrow about 10 yards down the trail soaked with blood. I was shocked I got a full pass through with hitting that Inch or so sapling. Another thing too, these heavy 220 grain broadheads straightened my arrow out In time before It hit the deer. It could've been ugly (gut shot) If I would've been using a light grained broadhead and arrow. High FOC does many good things. Here she Is. Any Idea on what you think she weighs (dressed)? I did weigh her.
Great story Schultzy, congrats.I'll guess 125 dressed (just a wag I still haven't shot anything). Take it easy. Jim
Way to go on another late season doe Steve. I know it's not the deer you wanted this season, but he should be even bigger next year. Congrats!! I'll go with 120#.
Congratulations. A late season mature doe is not an easy feat with a compound much less with a recurve.
