When you butcher your chickens do you eat them that day, or do you let them "age" a day or so like wild game?

We don't age the chickens. We may eat one that day but the rest get put in the freezer as soon as we are done processing them.

    Bummer. :(

I do age/rest my chickens when I butcher them. They definitely loosen up some after 24/48 hours in a well iced cooler or in the fridge.

He let the hens peck him till bloody ... then they started on his hackles ... he just lets them peck his feathers off ... dumb azz! So I am gonna eat him before the hens do....

And yes, he will sit in ice water brine for 2-3 days and then get roasted or rotisseried .... slabcrappy is coming over to do it as I really don't want to....

Hadn't thought about that. I guess they do age when we thaw them out in the fridge. We may put them in the fridge a week before we cook it so there is probably a couple days of aging unless the aging has to be "open air". Ours stay in their wrappings until we use them.

I have to get on you a bit here, Tony. This is the tough part about "chickens" and you need to toughen up and get it done yourself. There has been a time or two where I didn't want to but, whether I wanted to or not it had to be done and they are YOUR chickens, the responsibility you signed on for when you decided to do this. Pretend it is a deer, you like killing them.

I am willing to do it, but he is more willing :D. The Dorking is the only one i felt any kind of connection to ... but if he was suffering, i would have killed him immediately
... and like I said, Sal is willing and has done it many times ...

    True dat!

There were 2 other eggs on the poop board bit one was shell less and the other partially shell less .... I guess that is common for a hen's first egg....

Boy he is looking rough. I don't see anything on there that would really be worth the effort. Neck hackles look fairly short and not many tail (schlappen) feathers. Thanks for asking though Tony!
