Why is it that every time I post on this site some punk takes a cheap shot at me? Both Todd and Brodie have asked me to be active on these forums, and this is a perfect example of why I'm not. Good bye. Again.
I'd hardly say asking a question is taking a cheap shot, nor would I consider myself "some punk". I watched the video and simply questioned the decision to take a hard quartering-to shot on a whitetail from a treestand. I was taught from a young age that shot is not ethical. If you're offended by someone simply asking a question and unable to defend your decision without throwing around your years of experience with an "I've killed more deer than you so your opinion doesn't count" mentality perhaps the Internet isn't the place for you. The fact of the matter is that you're a professional - people read your books, your articles, listen to you on podcasts, etc. Other bowhunters look to you as an example of what to do and what not to do. For far too long I believe we've seen people on TV make poor decisions but there was no recourse for their actions. Sure, the person at home could yell at their TV or complain to their buddies about it, but the person on the other end never saw or felt any of that. Now we're all being held to a higher standard thanks for the ability to have conversations about these types of things. Myself included in that. I've made poor decisions on shots I've taken before and been ripped on this same Forum for it. But I didn't run away and decide not to talk about it. The past is the past - we learn from our mistakes and move on. And for the record, this is directly from the IL Bowhunter Education course study guide.
When I saw this yesterday I planned on just keeping my opinion to myself because I don't have the decades of bow hunting experience that the two of you do, but now I just can't. The video was well put together and very entertaining. Congratulations to the OP on a great buck. I was literally taken by surprise, though, when the arrow was launched at that angle. I just assumed he would wait for a better presentation. In the post shot interview the OP referred to being surprised at the buck getting back up after what "looked like a double lung shot". The shot placement was spot-on perfect if the deer was broadside, but at the shot angle presented there was no way possible that was a double lung shot. It appeared to get the on-side lung on entry and at that angle most definitely came out the gut on the other side. As to the "cheap shot from some punk" comment directed at Justin, all I could do was chuckle to myself.
So can I ask “when do you take a quarter to shot” the cartoon showed almost frontal. Would you have taken the shot freelancer took if you were on the ground. If it is a mild quarter to do you shoot for the opposite shoulder like I have been taught? Or quarter to shots are out? I realize that the situation and variables are in the 100s. But as a rule broadside or quartered away or no shot? Educate me guys! Please! there is a nine point that we have been watching for 2 months that crosses a field to my blinds left always quarter to a little at 20-40 yards 2 or three nights a week just before dark. I d like to hunt him and I don’t want to move the blind closer to his bed. ???? Thanks Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Thanks I guess I’ll have a talk with this nine point and ask him to turn a little when I finally get to hunt him lol. But all kidding aside patience is the key waiting for the shot that gives you the biggest window of vitals. Quartered away and broadside are best odds. Thanks again. Good luck out there. I am getting really excited only 22 more days!! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
The strangest thing about the shot you took is that you weren't even in a position where you were forced to take it. Light was still good. None of the deer were on alert, except from the big buck moving in, so you pretty much had all day to wait for a better broadside shot. And then to act like that when someone asks you about it, well, you're not doing yourself or anyone who watches your videos any favors. You f***** up, man up to it, dude.
