I have been thinking about getting the safety razor for a bit. I shave my head and am a little intimidated by it. Mach 3's are getting expensive. I think I'll tell the wife to get it for me for my bday next month. Where did you pick the kit up? and how much?

Fitz. I've met you a couple of times. You always have facial hair. You don't need this.

    There's a number of sources.

I got the Imperial kit (canister, puck, pre-shave oil, & aftershave) here: Pomade, Mens Grooming, Barber Supplies - Imperial Barber Products

I was going to get everything else from this site ( Shaving Supplies - Shaving Accessories | Classic Shaving ), but they were out of the razor I wanted, so I only got the strop there.

I ended up getting my blade from Royal Shave: RoyalShave - Safety Razors, Straight Razors, Shaving Brushes, Shave Soaps and Cream, Mustache and Beard Care & Men's Grooming Tools

This is the article that finally convinced me to bite the bullet - Straight Razor Shaving For Beginners | The Art of Manliness

I've been shaving strictly with a straight razor for going on five years now. Best move I've ever made in some ways. You won't regret it. There is a large learning curve, but not impossible. Not to advertise, but there is an online forum that is a great resource of knowledge, and the members are all Gentlemen. Check out Straight Razor Place . com if you need some help. All the best-J

Well, I didn't kill myself :tu:

I think I'm going to enjoy this. I like the process, not unlike how I like the process of archery.

Oh, and where has this styptic pencil been all my life!?!

What kind of blade(s) do you have?

I decided to start with a Dovo 5/8 Half Hollow.

Yikes, straight razors are not cheap! I can see how it saves money in the long run but the initial investment, wow.

The one I picked up was definitely one of the cheapest I could find @ $115. You can spend more on a blade than a new bow!

I'll probably find a nicer one down the road if I stick with it. Then maybe I'll make a new handle for my current blade out of bone or antler :tu:

After consideration, I think I'll stick to the disposable cartridge razors. The cartridge helps keep the blades at the right angle since I dry shave.

I have two primary blades. A 5/8 round from Dovo and a 7/8 spike from Bengall, both full hollow.

I have been wanting to do that for a while now. Where did you buy it from? I heard you can practice on a balloon, if you can shave the cream off a balloon you can do your face.

I've been using a safety razor for 7 years. I can get around 30 good shaves out of one safety razor. Umm yeah did I mention they cost me about 3 cents a piece. If the straight razor gives you a fit try a safety razor as well, I have both. Your face will feel like a million bucks, and won't feel burned. If you get frustrated shoot me a PM, maybe I can give you a few pointers as it can be frustrating at first. Good luck:tu:

I see what looks to be a styptic pencil. But shouldn't you also have a supply of bandages, at least to start out?

    I ordered my stuff from:
Pomade, Mens Grooming, Barber Supplies - Imperial Barber Products
    and
Shaving Supplies - Shaving Accessories | Classic Shaving

Found the blade itself on Amazon.

Been using the straight blade since March and I really like it. I want to pick up a safety razor for travel though. I don't think the airlines will let my straight razor slide.

Styptic pencils are the greatest. I use it more for day to day cuts than for shaving :busted: Wish I knew of them before.

When I get around to buying a second blade, I'm going to make antler scales for the Dovo I have now.

I changed over to a safety razor a few months back and love it, very cheap and works as well as the expensive replaceable cartridges.
