Is there a trailcam out there that can function in cold weather. I was thinkin about getting one for a trapline but I dont want to waste my time if it wont work. by cold I mean from 30 to -40 degrees.

My Leaf River took these photos along with many others at -30 last winter. Camera take 4 D cell and motion takes 3 C cell batteries. They lasted about 3 months in the cold winter too.

I'm sure those aren't "typical" operating temps, but it worked for me!

I'm not sure about the cold, but my Moultrie I-40 can easily withstand temps up to 118 degrees. If it can handle the heat, it can probabaly handle the cold.

I don't agree. Electronics always struggle in colder temps. Thats why cars don't start when its -35.

Thanks Fitz and OKbowhunter. I agree Fitz. I deal with electronics and alot of them cant handle the cold. I think I will go with the leaf river. It looks like it works great for you. Which camera do you have? the 5 or 7 megapixel.

Mine is an older version DC-2BU (4 megapixels I believe). I've had it for over 3 years now. The only time I've ever had any issues with mine is when I switched to cheap batteries. Switched back to Duracell & Energizer and it's been great.

I have the Leaf River too, The IR 5 model. The battery life is great. Granted it doesn't get quite as cold in my area as it does Fitz's, but it has easily withstodr temperatures 5 and 10 degrees below zero with 20 below wind chills, great camera!

I've had people report crazy success's with their SG550s or Covert IIs in the winter up north (WI, MN areas) using lithium AAs. One guy reported getting like 10K pics on 8 lithium AAs in January in WI. Of course, these are just people bragging on their cameras, and I have no way of verifying how true they are. But keep in mind the manufacturer stats on it are "operates from -4 to 140 degrees F".

The problem you will get with most any cameras in extreme cold is the night time pics, IRs seem to function less perfectly when the temps plummet.

My next camera is going to be the Bushnell Trophy Cam, so I'm glad to hear that some folks are having good luck with the tiny AAs!

Right on Trevor, couldn't agree more. So far my Reconyx (RC60) has worked well In cold temps (below zero temps). Like Trevor said though, the IR pics aren't quite as good.

Cannot beat the 55o's or the Covert in cold weather. I have had four out since June same batteries and a ton of pics.

My Cuddebacks stay out til they drop 'em and I can't complain about the quality. You may go through batteries a little more that you would in August, but I love getting pics of bruisers late season in the snow!
