Fletch, I am gonna have to totally agree with you. A liver hit deer can survive for quite some time. The bare minimum that I would wait on a liver hit would be 4 hours. Longer weather permitting. If you have the time to wait, then why even risk it. The buck that I killed last year was hit in the liver and one lung, and he was not dead in 45 minutes. I backed out, waited 3 hours and went back and found him stone dead. And I wouldn't of even went back that early but I watched a coyote walking around the area right at dark and had already watched my buck bed down and had a really hard time getting up. Anyways, all I'm saying is to wait as long as possible even on liver hit deer, because they don't always die right away.
Fletch is correct. I have experienced the exact same things as him. Sent from my Galaxy S3 and Tapatalk 2
I shot this buck last season & consider that to be about as close to a perfect shot as you can get. Was a clean pass through & good blood on the arrow. Worst blood trail I have ever seen on a good hit & stumbled upon him the next morning but unfortunately the coyotes found him first. That story is the reason I switched broad heads this year. Agree with Fletch on liver hits. Two years ago shot a buck through the liver, waited 3-1/2 hours and found him in his first bed still alive but unable to rise from it.
I won't get down on this experience at all. It's a building block, this is my second season and after last season I had 8 long months to think about all the mistakes I made, especially the difficulty of hunting tiny tiny property. I learned a lot and already am seeing results. Total deer sightings in stand 2012/13 = 9, total in 2013 = 8. So it is already becoming a much more productive year. More deer will go down... and be recovered this year.
