I was thinking about going to Ohio to bow hunt and i was wondering if any of you know of some good public ground. Preferably one that has good deer density's or one that has some good 120+ bucks. Thanks
No offense to you personally, but I was just having a conversation with someone the other day about public land hunting. The jist of the convo was basically that anyone who is hunting public ground and onto good deer certainly isn't posting about it on a Forum. Unfortunately when it comes to public land and having good luck you may just be on your own. After all, nobody wants a bunch of other guys creeping in on their action.
I'll second that. Try picking up an "outdoorsman atlas" for Ohio. If nothing else this is a great time to hike around. Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL
There would be no reason for taking offense to you comment. I personally find it amazing that the people who made this site personally respond to people. You make a good point about public ground and how people really wont post about it. For me i would have no option I would have to hunt public, unless by some chance i get access to private land even if it is 10 acres. How do you approach getting access to land.
Not to burst your bubble but bc Ohio is one of the cheaper NR states to hunt we get alot of pressure. Personally we stand right next to PA & MI.... which is Horrible. Private land is becoming harder and harder to come by without leasing or knowing someone. I wish you luck on your journey here, ive killed some public land dandys but theres def alot more hunters on public with the economy.
I disagree with the implication that you won't get any good help by asking. Most people won't help and many can't help, but I think you would be surprised how many nice people are out there that are willing to help. They usually don't post it, but will shoot you a PM instead. You just have to hope the right person see your post.
As far as accessing private land, get on google earth, find a few spots youre interested in, give them a drive by, locate the owner, and talk to them for a while. Offer to help them around the farm a bit. I've found some owners actually want a hunter in to keep random hunters out. They do make a good point about not telling someone where the money spots are. Also, with the economy, the number of hunters has rather decreased, at least here in IN it has. When you think about it, it makes some sense. The cost of the tag is rather high, then it has to be processed, then you have equipment, fuel, time... Yes, if you use an extremely cheap rifle, hunt in carharts, can process yourself then it may be slightly cheaper. To most though, if you're already strapped for cash it's hard to justify the cost for something that isn't a sure thing. Also, I'm not knocking carharts, it was just 2 seasons ago I took my monster in ripped up carharts and the cheapest muzzleloader on the market.
