23mil./ yr is ALOT of jack for a catcher.

Weirdly, I think he is worth it - and am happy for the Twins. BIG step in the right direction, IMO.

Yep...nice to see a small market team keep one of their own stars. Hopefully Milwaukee can do the same with Fielder.

Yeah good news and bad news is right. I'm a Mauer fan. Always thought he was a good dude that does things the right way. But......... that contract and whatever he does on the field is not going to replace 40 something saves in a season. Trouble in twinkie land.

I see a move to 1st base in the future, he is a very good catcher, but when money like that is invested, they usually want to protect it. He is one crash at home plate, or foul tip away from having a season shortened or a career ended. People always forget the guy Pete Rose trucked in the all star game was very young, very good, and very much never the same again. Catching is very dangerous, and now they have 23 million reason to protect him. What a swing that guys has, man is he quiet through the zone. If you ever get a chance, watch his swing from behind the plate.

EDIT...forgot you guys have Morneau at first...will be intersting to say the least. 8 years is a long time.

Great move by the Twins. They HAD to lock up their hometown hero. I bet there are a lot of sad Red Sox and Yankees fans out there now. No doubt both of these teams would of thrown crazy money at Mauer. I can just imagine him playing half his home games at Fenway and playing pepper with the green monster, or bombing homers in the lefty friendly Yankee Stadium.

Nathan will be missed this year. He was as close to a sure thing out of the pen as you could get. The idea of Jon Rauch closing out games isn't nearly the same as Nathan. I've always like the Twins though, so I hope they pull through this.

Yankees weren't going after him. They are loaded at catcher and have the next Mauer tearing apart AAA right now.

I'm taking a guess that your talking about Jesus Montero?

I've heard and read a little on him, and while his bat may be like Mauer's, scouts say his poor defense is most likely going to push him out from behind the plate.

That amount of money is incredible. I didn't think the whole franchise was worth that much...:)

Yep that's pretty much the word on him. Good throwing arm though. They'll keep working on his mechanics and defense behind the plate. The guy can hit though.
