Hey guys, season opens up in a couple weeks (Oct 1), I've got two stands setup in the swamp, 1 hang on and 1 climber, I'm on some nice sized trails near what I believe to be their bedding area. I am thinking of adding a couple mock rubs and scrapes weekend before season opener, should be pretty much pre-rut then. Considering putting out some buck juice and deer caine. Any advice from those who have chased them in the past would be appreciated. Reports are there's a 10 and a 16 point out there boy do I need a trail cam.
the areas i hunt with swamps are deep and thick tons of mud and water. i hunt natural funnels the deer choose to maneuver throughout the swamp. generally then consist of spots where the muddy water is at its shallowest such as sandbars. i've always had good luck in these areas so if you have those kinds of things look around for a nice tree and be ready! good luck
If your hunting for Swamp bucks look for up rising areas in the water and low water/muddy areas where it makes it much easier for the deer to cross, look for your basic things such as heavy tracks in the area so forth and so on. If the tracks are heavy over the sandbar area your best luck is to hunt that area. Good hunting my friend.
I've had great luck with breeding calls inthe swamp in the early stages of the rut.whiney doe bleats, aggresive buck grunts, and I really made that dominant buck angry!he was uprooting saplings, the hair on his back was raised, and he stomped all around looking for a fight!
One property I hunt is swamp as well...is the whole area swamp? or are there ares where the elevation changes a few feet, enough for the deer be able to get up and out of the swamp for a while? My area has this...the spot my stand is on is an area of about 2.5 acres that comes up out of the swamp and is about 2-4ft in elevation higher than the swamp....it opens up to hardwoods and is a natural funnel because 150yds either side of my stand are the ends of streets and the deer HAVE to go by my stand to get through the area!
