Look at the bottom of the oil pan, starter, trans pan... also look at the driveway for oil spots. Have him start the truck and look at the exhaust. It should be basically clear. If it's blue, just walk, that's oil. Take the truck on a good long drive. Then look at the tailpipe. It should be completely dry. If it's wet it could be indication of a leaking head gasket. Make sure the trans shifts smooth under normal driving. Then get it on it a few times and makes sure it doesn't slip under load. Let go of the wheel on a good road and make sure it drives straight. As stated above, check for tire wear. It should be even across all tires. Pull the dipstick, make sure it has the proper amout of oil on it. Check the coolant overflow reservoir. That will tell you the condition of the cooling system. Those are very rarely kept up. Also, transmissions are prone to lack of maintenance. Check the air filter. Of course make sure all the features such as four wheel drive, and the a/c. Make sure no funny smells come from ventillation. Those are just a few I can think of off the top of my head. Good luck.
