Piggy backing on the GMO Salmon thread. I notice that when I eat shrimp... I sometimes have severe stomach issues, but not all the time. My wife bought some shrimp last week that we cooked on the grill and I got pretty ill. When I asked, she told me the market where she bought it had a notice that said it came from Taiwan. My guess is from a shrimp farm.

I don't eat shrimp very often (because I never know how I will react) but my question is :"Should a restaurant be required to reveal the source of foods such as shrimp, salmon etc... or just serve it without telling the customer?

Curious what you guys may think. I realize the source of the shrimp may have nothing to do with my body's reaction.

Yea I don't think it needs to be revealed but it should be known. As a marketing tool alot of restaurants outrightly state where they got the food to lure in the organic or local customers.

Also, maybe your wife is trying to poison you?

Wouldn't you be more willing to go to a restaurant if they had a sign out front that read:

"Come try our farm raised "Asian Shrimp" MMM...Yummy!

Funny... I would probably be worth more.

I wouldn't care because a shrimp is a shrimp and I don't really buy into the hype that genetically altered fish are dangerous... They aren't doused in chemicals to grow faster, they just have a gene in the DNA that makes them do so.

I see it similar to not forcing Nike to place a label on their sneakers stating a 12 year old Asian kid made these for you in a sweatshop for 50 cents an hour... Enjoy your run!

I am not worried about chemically altering them... just the purity of the water they are raised in. But I have been doing some more reading. (granted it is online) I am seeing that perhaps the shrimp I should be more worried about is the shrimp caught from the US Gulf Coast. One report quoted as high as 193 PPM of oil with 11 PPM being considered toxic.

We caught some blue crabs last summer and were going to cook them until I noticed they still had oil sticking to their legs. We released them.

I wasn't going to go there (because I believe the reports are exaggerated) but IMO many times farm raised foods can be better than wild as they are in a controlled environment and a lot of the variability is removed. Not always the case but the potential is there to improve both quality and quantity of food supply.

Fresh caught shrimp are better tasting than foreign because they aren't preserved and frozen many times (atleast for those of us in the south). Same way a tenderloin cut out of a deer and put straight on the grill is better than one you eat 7 months later.

The article states that its not as cost effective if you throw away half the food like box of oranges or lettuce. Here in Hawaii it is more than cost effective. I actually buy from Costco and throw away half the food because it spoils. But its cheaper than going to Safeway to only buy a few. a 15# bag of potatoes at Costco is cheaper than buying 5 Potatoes at Safeway.

Its been a while... I remember stopping for real snow cones in Wahiawa a lot. We lived there when there were no hotels or resorts on the North Shore.

Snow cones in Wahiawa? No more, theyre all on the north shore. Wahiawa is a pretty druggy place with lots of prostitutes and transvestites. The city has actually started to clean it up and it looks better, but still feels like Tijuana.

All places near army bases go downhill.

My mom has been to Taiwan, Philippines, Bangladesh, china (multiple times), Vietnam, basically all over asia and the south pacific.... and she now won't eat any farm-raised fish/shrimp from places like that.

I've been all over South and Central America, India and a few others. I did not tour any shrimp farms... but I have no words for the filthy conditions of a few of the countries I have visited. With no real oversight... you've just gotta wonder.
