My girlfriend and I went hunting on the 23rd for a buck that we knew was wounded (broken back leg, not from us) and was on our land relating to a corn food plot. We decided to run and gun and just sit on some chairs in the grass without a blind. This was primarily pheasant hunting land and didn't have anything set up for deer. As we are sitting in the middle of the grass next to the corn and thinking this is stupid, we look over and there he is walking into the other side of the corn way out of range! Now we are thinking what should we do!? After thinking for 5 minutes we decided to put a stalk on him. Wind was perfect, corn was loud, snow was quiet and he most likely wouldn't see out of our corn since it is broadcasted. With my girlfriend leading the way we begin our stalk and eventually spot him about 3 yards in. The whole time I'm think he is going to just any second! We finally got to a position where we could see just his vitals through a very small window. He was quartering to is pretty hard and I thought shoot.... All this way and no shot. So here we stand at 6 yards from this buck and not knowing what to do. Lucky for us he turns his head away from us and opens up his vitals just enough. We could see the little fold where the back of his leg turns to chest and I told her to put her arrow right there. I can tell you right now I am glad I gave her lighted nocks the week before for Christmas because I watched that nock disappear into his chest right where I wanted it! We thought he just dropped in his tracks so we decided to back out and come back later. On our way out I looked over and saw her nock and though she had a pass through so I went to grab it. It was about 50 yards from where I thought he was laying. Turns out it wasn't a pass through it just stuck with the buck until it fell out there and the buck was bedded right next to it... Oops. He busted and our hearts sank. He didn't move very fast and I saw where he went so I grabbed the arrow anyway. Blood all the way to the nock so all but a pass through. Also had guts on it which I knew would happen with the shot I told her to take. With that information I knew it was an overnight wait. Well a very short easy blood trail in the snow the next morning led to a very happy sight! First deer, first buck, first harvest with a bow and she shot a bigger buck than anyone in my immediate family! It was also a very ethical harvest since the buck was in pretty tough shape. Pretty proud of her! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
