I own 30 acres of ground (18 timber, 10 tillable, 2 acre yard). On the east side of my timber, the neighbor had corn planted. He shelled the corn last week and spilled probably 15 -20 bushels of shelled corn when loading the grain truck. I'm seeing deer EVERY evening eating the spilled corn. Here is my issue. Baiting is illegal, but the laws say that incidental spills are NOT considered baiting. I'm trying to get my sons a shot with their bow. Should I set them up near the spill? I have permission on his ground, thats not an issue. I'm torn, the law says its legal.....but I don't know if I want the kids to get their first deer like that. What say you?
Hunting is taking advantage of anything and everything that comes your way, legally speaking of course. I would be hunting near that corn!
I agree. I say hunt it and let the kid shoot his first deer. It might make for an easier shot too if the deer are standing still and feeding which could result in a better hit for his first deer. A hunted a piece of standing corn late in the season last year that the farmer couldn't get to after his tractor broke down. I don't see this as being any different.
I'd put my boys where the deer are...every crop field in IL will have these piles over the upcoming weeks...
Out here they log out a clearcut, burn everything once they are done and then wonderful masses of plants grow not to mention they replant it with new trees. Its a wonderful food source and its not baiting its like a plot.. Spilled corn in a farmers field is not illegal, and I doubt its all in one exact spot...hunt where the deer are Dave. Good luck.
