Picked up an issue of a popular bowhunting magazine and ran across this. It's called The Stand Scouter. Went to there website and this is what it says... The Stand Scouter™ scouting stick is easy to use and handy to have with you while you are in the woods scouting for deer sign or trees to hang your tree stand. The Stand Scouter™ scouting stick uses the same mathematical principles the US Forestry Industry has used for years to measure tree heights only now we have broken them down into a system that uses 1 foot increments which allows you to stand close to the tree and see exactly where you can hang a stand before ever climbing the tree saving time and effort. You can also determine yardages out to 40 yards while in your tree stand. It is easy to carry with you and stores easily in your 4 wheeler rack or in your truck for when you head out to the woods. If it somehow helped you with the proper angle to place your stand to account for taper as you climb I might be more interested. Why would this help someone? If you want to check it out it's at http://www.thestandscouter.com/
It seems that it is just alot of extra work that isn't very accurate. Call me crazy, but I'll take a rangefinder. As far as the tree that my stand will be in.. I have never really found it hard to climb to a height that I was comfortable with, I don't need a stick to tell me that.
I guess I don't get it... My stand goes in at the top of my sticks. What is this thing going to tell me that won't? Not being a wiseass, just don't get it.
It's a more simple version of this http://archerrange.com/ Which sells for $50. The problem with each is that in varied terrain rolling hills steep inclines, etc, it's really not going to be that precise. If you live where it's DEAD FLAT, it would be useful, otherwise, not so much.
