Anyone heard this story about the Catfish under ?????? Dam? I have heard it so many times about practically every lake in the country (exaggeration) that I usually start laughing before the person finishes telling it. The location and details change slightly but the storyline pretty much remains the same.

    A letter to Mythbusters:
"All my Life I have lived in Kentucky, and since I was a boy I have heard of a story about catfish in the Kentucky river. The story goes that Divers were going down at the locks in the Kentucky river (I have always heard this about lock 11 but I am sure it changes depending on were you live in Kentucky) to repair or check on the lock. While the diver is under the water near the lock he notices movement in a large area at the moss covered bottom of the river. He then sees a catfish the size of a Volkswagen Beetle shoot out grab another fish and the swims back under the moss. The diver then comes out of the water and hangs up his scuba gear and never goes back into the river or dive again. Anytime I have heard the myth the person that tells it will have claimed to know the diver in question."

Its like that at every lake/damn. Not exactly same thing but close to it. I would like someone to actually go down to the bottoms and see whats down there with live video feed. Until someone does Ill just nod my head and laugh on the inside.

Same story here in lake Wylie. I do know a guy who caught many around the 100lb mark. Beetle size I doubt it.

Urban legend it has been said about every dam in the USA I'm sure divers have seen some big fish but if this were true I'm sure somebody would have caught one by now or fish n game would have shocked one up

I've been on a electrostatic testing of the New River, were we shocked up a 50 lb catfish. Once we placed it in the separate holding tubs for similar sized fish or fish we thought were to big for them to eat. After placing the Catfish in a holding tub with 5lb Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass we started to record the different fish.

Once the Flat Head Catfish started to recover from the shock, the 5lb fish started to disappear. We were thinking someone was moving the fish before their size and weight was recorded on further inspection we realized the catfish was eating the 5 Pounder's.

    3...That catfish ate 3 5lb Bass.

I've never thought they could consume a meal of that size. And this story of the Giant Catfish even came up after our discovery. So I don't believe it's not going end anytime soon.

Same stories about the dams on the Arkansas river where I live. The biggest we have ever caught on trotline is 89 lb flat head and 68lb blue. Guy last year caught the OK state record flat head on rod an reel it was 85lbs.

I shot a 46 lb Flathead bowfishing in SC that had a couple carp in the 3 pound range as well as a couple smaller one's in it's gut. But that's a long way from a VW.

So I am figuring a catfish the size of a VW would weigh roughly 1500 pounds [10 ft long w/ 10 ft girth (circumference)]

Generalized formula for calculating the weight of fish is as follows:
(girth X girth X length) divided by 800

    BASS - Weight Calculation Formulas
    Length² x Girth ÷ 1,200 = weight
    (length x length x girth ÷ 1,200) = weight

    You can also use:
(length X length X length) divided by 1600

    BLUEGILL - Weight Calculation Formula
(length X length X length) divided by 1200

    PIKE - Weight Calculation Formula
    Length³ ÷ 3,500 = weight
    (length x length x length ÷ 3,500) = weight

TROUT and SALMON- Weight Calculation Formula
    Length x Girth² ÷ 800 = weight
    (length x girth x girth ÷ 800) = weight

    WALLEYE - Weight Calculation Formula
    Length³ ÷ 2,700 = weight
    (length x length x length ÷ 2,700) = weight

YES! Same story goes around here too... HA... the story here is they were looking for a body and found catfish that could swallow a human... the Divers said they would never go back... lol...

If it were true... I don't think River monsters would have to travel to Africa(or wherever it was) to find those giant catfish... that were no where near large enough to swallow a human.

I catch Blues fairly regularly on the Alabama River up to around 40 or so (estimated) on either live 9" shad or cut skipjack. Flatheads occasionally to around 25 or so. I did catch a really nice flathead last year on a 1/2 oz Little George that went about 30. Occasionally I'll hook a fish I can't slow down, which I imagine are probably Gator Gar. I got one (GG) to the boat once that was maybe 5 1/2-6ft but I cut my line instead of killing it.
