Thats a dang good deer. I would shoot him in a heartbeat! I say don't wait til the rut. Go after him now.
Hey there, I own 90 acres as well in KS. DO NOT do anything that will jeopardize him heading to another property. Unfortunately, you and I don't have the luxury of 500 acres. I like the decoy idea. Keep being persistent and it will happen. GOOD LUCK my man!!!
I went in after him again tonight! .... And almost the exact same thing happened, that occured Sunday. He was bedded again in this CRP field, he got up, milled around and then slowly moved off towards the corn. Passing by me at 50 yds behind some branches. I'm thinking a slight stand adjustment is in order...
I agree with the last sentence. You know where he stays "for now", but as already mentioned, all bets are off when the rut kicks in. Stay on him buddy, before he travels to parts unknown looking for some booty! lol
Hey Mark, I have been following you on this Six Shooter. I just read the comments over on your site. They all had good opions. I know exactly what you mean when you are not wanting to push it yet. I could go either way with it. I guess I probably would just hunt the stand thats there on the right wind direction, and I think you will know when its time to go in there and try and kill him. As you are only a county or two away from me, it sounds to me that you are hunting this buck with some kind of N or NW wind. The forcast looks like we are going to lose those winds during the next couple of days. Are you able to set up on him with any other kind of winds? One of the places I hunt is a very small chunk of land also, only 29 acres. The deer on this property like to bed in different bedding areas due to the different wind directions. Is this bucks bedding area keep him safe on all wind directions, or do you see him going somewhere else to bed? Good luck to ya Mark.
For those interested.... I posed this same situation to a couple "whitetail experts" (in my eyes)....Bill Winke (Founder of Midwest Whitetail.com), Dan Schmidt (Editor-in-Chief of Deer & Deer Hunting Magazine) and Todd Pringnitz (Founder of White Knuckle Productions). They shared their opinions on this situation and allowed me to share their thoughts with my readers. If you want to see their take on this, check out the link below... Dave - You got it, I've been hunting him on a N and NW wind. And my challenge is exactly what you noted, we'll be getting mostly winds from the South over the coming days, so I'm considering the same thing you brought up. Will he use this area at all with a S wind, will he use it differently, will he enter and leave it the same...? I really don't know and I'm sitting here trying to figure that out. He's bedding right on the Northern edge of my property, so I can't really get north of him and hunt him on that South wind. I could hunt East of where he beds, on the north side of the area I believe he is traveling to get into his bed though. The food source he is hitting is south of his bed, so if I wanted to set up in the evening to catch him moving to eat, I couldn't do it on a S wind either..... So i'm kind of leaning towards waiting til I get a N or NW wind again, and then move down 30 yards, closer to where he's entering the timber/corn.
Mark, sounds like you got a good game plan. Looks like weather is going to change middle of next week. I will be looking for an update. Kill that deer bud!!!!!!!
I would give the DAWG a call so that he can shoot him. I am very sure he would make a move right now! Good luck buddy!
Good luck buddy hope you get him. Sounds like moving your stand a little closer and waiting for the N NW wind is the way to go.
Thanks guys! Looks like now a week from tomorrow could be my best chance...light rain, and the first NNW wind
