I need some help guys... This past weekend I had an awesome encounter with a giant 6 pointer that I call "Six Shooter". I've got trail cam pics of him this fall in 2 spots within about 300 yards of each other, and I then watched him for about 4 hours on Sunday. Long story short, I saw him come in and bed about 90 yards from me in some CRP Sunday late morning. Around noon he stood up and walked off. I snuck out, but slipped back in at about 3:00 that afternoon. Around 5:30 he, out of nowhere, appeared standing in the middle of that field again. (Most likely had been bedded somewhere in that field all afternoon). He then proceeded to mill around, eat, rub little trees, etc til around 7:30. Finally he started moving my way, but eventually walked just 5-10 yards outside my range, behind some branches and into the timber. So my question is this....My property is 90 acres. 45 acres are in corn, and 45 is timber, CRP, and swamp. That being said, my plan was originally to hunt this property very little until late Oct/Early November and the rut. BUT....Now that I have this big boy pinned down pretty well, do I make a move on him and get aggressive? Should I move my stand closer to where he was moving? Do I continue to hunt this area and push in more? Or do I stick to my original plan and not over-hunt the area til the rut? What would you do? Also, to see pics of this stud of a 6 pointer (I'd guesstimate he's 110-115" as a 6!), and to read the full story, you can see it here... Click here: A Day With "Six Shooter"
ever used a decoy? if hes the dominate or one of the dominate bucks in that area that should draw his attention and bring him within range for the kill.
Waiting till the rut could be a huge mistake. Big bucks will often roam outside of their normal range and may change patterns significantly in that time. If you have him pegged now. Make your move. If you wait, someone else may be wrapping a tag around your bucks antlers or you just may never see him in daylight again.
Completely agree. When the rut hits, all bets are off. Hormones make bucks difficult if not impossible to pattern like one can during the stages of prerut. Go get him!!
That is a great story and a cool 6 pointer. I would move in right now, and use a decoy. If you arent sure he is the dominant buck there, only use 1 horn on the decoy. Good luck this season, and keep us updated.
Great looking 6 point! A rare buck he Is. Many years ago I had a 120 to 125 Inch 6 point at 12 yards. He came by chasing a doe and stopped, I was snoozing In my stand. Once I opened my eye's from hearing him grunting up a storm all I could do was watch him standing broadside In front of me. I didn't dare move as he would've been off to the races. I'd give my left nut to have that day back. Good luck with him If you decide to take him.
I’d hammer away now. If you don't have access to a decoy, then i have a suggestion. I watched a video, not sure what the name was, and the guy had a similar set up as you do. He cut off a small branch with plenty of leaf's on it and placed it in the open out in front of his stand. The next thing you know there were deer coming over to investigate the branch. This is a tactic that I plan on using if I ever encounter such a situation.
That is an awesome 6pt! Believe or not, here in Pa there are WMUs where he wouldn't be a legal buck (4pts on a side).
