Im thinking of using a ghillie suit for hunting this year. Do you use a ghillie suit? Where did you get it or did you make it yourself? If you don't like them please let me know why.
My wife bought me one from Scheels. It didn't take long and it was a matted mess as twigs and what ever else gets caught in it. I still have it, but never wear it. Good luck, MOBU
I know there is a lot of criticism towards Marc Anthony right now, but his ghillie suits are sweet. They are made for archery-specific hunting versus purchasing one from an Army supply store like I did! I had to trim a ton of it just so I could draw my bow. A cousin uses his Marc Anthony version down in South Carolina and loves it.
Mobu-"My wife bought me one from Scheels. It didn't take long and it was a matted mess as twigs and what ever else gets caught in it. I still have it, but never wear it." That's when it is working at its best!
I have two and use them every year. I got mine from BPS a long time ago. Leafy camo works just as well in the early season. I have had deer walk within 5-10 feet of me and never know I was there. I have used them to hunt deer from the ground with a man made blind and from trees.
I had one of these and eventually sold it. It worked really well, but there were alot of negatives. It weighed a ton. Lots of barbed wire fences around here, that was a no no. It made me sweat like crazy, and the material stunk from the day I bought it. For what I paid, I should have just bought a 3d ASAT suit.
Get the lightest one you can find and you want some level of water proofing. I wouldn't advise walking through the woods in it, pack it in to your ground spot and put it on then....unless you hunt in extremely open woods.
Very good advise. I always pack mine to where I'm going to set up and then put it on. They get tangled up and catch on every briar in the woods. The first time I used mine I wore it in and left a trail of material behind me. I have had deer within touching distance of me. I have seen some pretty wild expressions from deer when they are that close to you and realize your not a bush.
i plan on making my own. learned how to sew. now all i gotta do is take my unserviceable uniforms and old camo, cut 'em up and sew them on a jacket/pant combo. i'm gonna try and mimic the asat style.
I start out collecting the material used. The base is a pair of camo sweat pants and sweat shirt that is a size to big and a camo head net. The sky's the limit on what you can use for camo. We take care of a couple local cemeteries and when we haul the trash away there's always a lot of camo items I salvage. Silk flowers are great. Not so much as the flowers, but the greenery that is mixed in them. I have used multi colored yarn, straw, corn silk, shreaded strips of old camo clothing, strips of camo burlap, honey suckle vines. Get you a hot melt glue gun and start gluing. It takes awhile to get everything cut up into strips and glued in place but once you do you will vanish in the woods. I always hang mine outdoors for at least month to let it air out and fade into a very natural look.
hi gentlemen, I'm pretty new to hunting wildlife but I've been in the military for 14 years and I know a bit about ghillie suits...they must be in constant construction..the best ghillie suit does not exist...all depends on terrain, vegetation, back drop and most importantly mouvement of the bearer...you must BE the environement...so you need to imitate the vegetation that surrounds you..if you move you must adapt the camo to imitate this new area. So for advice I'd go with a netting base layer that you would attach rubber bands and 5-50 cord to let you adapt it for the area you're in, go with burlap for thickness and to break form...hope this is a bit of help.
