This morning I went out and started looking at a different part of the land I hunt and wow! I wish I would have looked here before. First off, tons of trails in the snow. Then not even 50 ft in the woods and I see 3 to 4 deer run off! I walked both sides of this finger. It kind of has a valley running in the middle. Let's just say I found some doe and buck bedding and some scrapes. Lots of trails. I set up a trail cam near a scrape that is right next to a trail that runs about 1/3 up the hill.
yeah i was not sure if it was a scrape at first that why i took a picture of it haha. :D it made sense since it seems like the dirt was scraped and spread in one direction. also all the tracks leading to it. its got a trail camera on it now!
Worked scrape is awesome. Really starting to ramp up my own scouting too hope I find the sign that you did. Good luck getting some pics on that scrape. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I always learn something new this time of year while shed hunting. When i was younger going shed hunting was all about finding antlers and now its the time i learn the most about the deer movement and sometimes find an antler ha.
Oh yeah I am always learning something. No sheds today :/ I don't think they are dropping bone here in fort Riley KS. Espc since one of the deer I saw was running with a full cage on.
Good stuff. I love scouting with some snow. We have WAY too much snow right now however. I plan to do much more scouting this year but some of our roads are closed right now even due to lack of maintenance.
That is great. I am hoping to get out tomorrow and do the same thing. I will have to look at that app. I have scoutlook but they don't have different icons for bedding or scrapes/rubs. Wish they would come out with some updates like that.
Careful where you put your trailcams. Two years in a row I'm convinced my trailcam pushed two 150+ class bucks out of the area. I'd get one picture of them then gone. I started putting the cameras higher in the tree ( 6-8 ft. high) and that seemed to work a little better. I'm guessing they see the camera and get spooked since it isn't natural.
Mature bucks spook because there is human scent where there shouldn't be. Human scent can remain for weeks after we've passed through an areas, if you're pushing their bedding areas you're going to have an adverse effect.
I'm sitting on a few trail cams waiting for the snow to melt before I stash them on public land, don't want anyone following my tracks right to them even though I have lock boxes and cables.
The ap is called huntstand. That is a good point about trail cams scaring the bucks away. I plan on keeping them in through summer when the bucks are not to cautious and don't spook from them or the scent. Just for inventory. Otherwise I don't go in and intrude at all. I just plan on setting up a mock scrape when I pull my trip camera during summer/fall and until opening day I won't be in there.
