Friend of mine is going on a hunt to Alberta in the next few weeks and we were talking. If, he were to kill a deer he wanted to get mounted how do you get the head back? Probably a dumb question but I honestly didn't know.

I assume he is flying??? Many outfitters have a local taxi service they will offer. Or you can always do an overnight shipping deal. Cape out completely and salt the hide.

I mean I assume the outfitters dealt with this before...but I was just curious.

He should ask the outfitter specifically how they handle it.

Buddy of mine did that, outfitter caped it, salted and froze it. Then they shipped it via UPS 2 day, and he got it and it was still frozen and went straight into his freezer, until he could take it to his taxidermist. Another buddy had the taxidermist at the outfitter do his mount and they shipped him the finished product. These were not Canada though. Not sure if they have different rules.

Just put it in your carry-on or wear it like a hat/cape.

After my successful Wyoming hunt, the outfitter caped it and froze it. I took the cape home on my carry on (just let the airline know when you get there, any airport with a lot of hunters going through it will be used to it.) The outfitter then shipped the antlers to me no problem.

Ide have the outfitter do the taxidermy work and have the finished product shipped to you. sometimes there are some stupid regulations about bringing a kill across the border but there should be no problem when its a mount.
