My experience with minerals is that the highest use period is the months of April and May. I believe that this coincides with snow melt/green up and fawn drop season. In other words, after a winter of not having much access to minerals, once the frost leaves the ground the deer will actively pursue minerals. Especially the does before they drop their fawns. Another increase in mineral use seems to occur mid July when I see an increase in buck activity. This activity continues but gradually tapers off when the antlers harden and velvet is shed. After that I don't see much activity until next spring. Activity occurs in peaks and valleys. Right now is a valley. Have patience.
I see a drop in activity when there is more green vegetation for the deer to eat. It will come and go. Don't give up on it! It is not a food source so deer will not flock to it as often. I think the activity is higher when it is first introduced to an area because deer are curious creatures that constantly browse for different food sources. During their browsing, they come across a mineral site and it has their attention for a few days and they move on. Some will be back more frequently than others. I use mineral sites to give deer the extra minerals they need to be healthy and grow bigger antlers. I keep them refreshed so it is there if they want it. I hope this helps!
Tons of help guys, I guess I just hear bout people with 1000's of pics an I wonder why I don't. Goin to check to often is prolly one of those problems. How I thought minerals worked are that deer hit em all the time throughout spring an summer, not just in spurts. An trust me no way shape or form am I dissin any products! I've had success with 2 outta the 3 I used.
Well when you do let me know, I'm sure the torrential down pour were havin right is not helpin anythin at all! I just put down the last of my Monster Raxx yesterday. Question; anyone can answer. I saw an older video that Tom made an it he said that sandy/loamy? dirt is better then clay cuz deer will eat the sandy type dirt more. Well my problem is that all the dirt is clay mainly around here. Sandy to me makes me think of how the south is an I know for a fact I will not find/ have a hard time findin it on my property. What are some clues to let ya know its a good spot for minerals based on just the dirt? I'm thinkin this may be part of the problem
That is an OLD video. From the sites that were in sandy soil the mineral leached out more and the wholes were bigger. There are some clays that we haven't had luck with but that goes with a number of other soils. Right now I prefer to put it in fertile soil he most but really like using an area with clay. The clay helps hold water when it rains and the deer love drinking the water after it rains.
Well I'm goin to check on my food plot cuz without a doubt I'm gonna have to wear waders to get to =[ but my main monster Raxx site should now be soaked, so I'm prayin their will be a puddle around the site!
