Age old story-- IT is just another the cost center with no ROI.... I agree.. how did we ever survive without PC's.. I mean lets face it-- the abacus and short hand secretary were all we needed!
You well never make money with IT but how much are you losing when your system goes down and your paying 100 engineers to sit on their hands for two days? Probably more than an IT guy makes in a year! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
For the company I work for, it only takes one breech of confidential information to ruin our reputation for decades. Luckily bowhunting.com isn't blocked here but we block Facebook, YouTube, etc. We can't afford for an incident to happen like what happened with Home Depot, SONY, or Target. Companies are really big on meeting industry standards and protecting their customers/confidentiality, regardless of the line of work or the products/services they provide. EDIT: Anyone who says IT is a cost center and can't make money has no idea what they're talking about. IT is responsible for faster communication, collaboration, EDI, online marketing, the list goes on. The first thing people do when researching a product is check out their Web site. A company with no Web site is missing out on so much potential growth/revenue it's not even funny. My company's IT organization is directly responsible for making billions of dollars every year from online ordering, marketing campaigns, protecting intellectual property and confidential documentation, and making things run cheaper and quicker. Saving money is making money. Sota, you would get his head kicked in here making fun of our IT guys to their face like that. We have amateur MMA fighters, bikers, and retired military here. IT "nerds" aren't what they used to be in most places.
Here we go again my IT guys could beat your IT guy up or like mma skills are of any use in office banter. I agree with websites being important, if it is half assed and not current and active you are better off without one.
Says the guy who makes fun of co-workers to their face about their stature and for enforcing policies. You must be a joy to work with. I'm just trying to point out that not all people in IT are the stereotypical lanky "nerd". Sota, the know-all, great all business man. Get off your high horse.
Said the guy who said I would get my head kicked in for making fun of an IT guy. Relax Spear, I give people crap all the time and can take it as well from coworkers.
I'm cool, calm and collected, it's just daunting to converse with you sometimes. I'm not saying we don't have fun here but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the things you say don't always come off as just friendly office banter. Yes, I said that, because like I said, I was expressing that not all IT people will just let someone like you make fun of them for being in IT, especially to their face.
Are you saying you belong in a museum? Haha, I kid. I know what you mean, I'd rather have someone who tells it like it is than the hipsters running around with the tight pants and selfie sticks.
Hm i just happen to be an IT guy as well and supposedly a "security" guy. For CJ essentially it sounds like your place of work installed web filtering/monitoring technology like BlueCoat which has a database of how sites are classified. I know blah blah right. The down side is that there is no possible way for a IT person to verify that classification is correct. Its a best guess of content based on content matching and key words. I wouldn't be surprised if the email you got was not sent by some automated mechanism either unless they are "low" tech. Being an IT guy and jarhead in a former life I can appreciate people like Sota who speak their mind. To be honest it comes with the territory and I have learned over time to be more "people friendly" as a result. We are all trying to do a job but sometimes it seems one delays the other. The key is finding a good balance to allow people to do their job but not give away the keys to the castle. Not as easy as it sounds unfortunately. Stack on top of that internal politics and that makes things fun. Also consider that the company is paying for the bandwidth so they should have the right to determine what it is used for right. What happens when Suzie can't finish payroll because Johnny is streaming Netflix? Yeah rules sux but I get paid for enforcing them so I don't complain.
Most the time dumbass admins that use software to block a site does it by URL like www.bowhunting.com well you can get around that by using the sites IP Address instead. Or you can insert proxies into your browser and get around it every time no matter how he blocked it.
Hmmm sounds like you have a high opinion of IT admins also.. LOL Here is the deal CJ.. No need to kick the sleeping dog -- you don't want to get bit! They can lock you out of the web all together if they want to.
all of this is happening because we are becoming a socialist country and no one is allowed to be offended. need to change things at the top of the food chain first. usually the guys at the top are rich and have no common sense. somewhere along the line people lost there backbone to stand up for what is right.
Just had my entire IE freeze up when I tried to access our time recording app. It only works in IE so I couldn't use chrome or Firefox like I would like to. Turns out it freezes at 115% zoom... WTF?? Glad I had IT cuz I never would have thought about that Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We dumbass admins are just doing our jobs implementing technology to solve HR problems, which is ridiculous. Unless it's part of your job to surf bowhunting.com at work, do your job as an American and get back to work! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
