Hey guys, Been getting this buck on our cams almost every night and just wondering what you guys think about the antler on his right side. If its just broke off we will leave him till next season cause he will be a dandy but if its genetic we will shoot him if we get the chance.
im gonna go with broken. But im sure if he shows up during a hunt you will be able to tell, within bow range atleast.
Looks like it was damaged in velvet and finally fell off during the hardening process, looks like it still has a little black on the end.
likely broke; but even if its not it could have been a pre-antler development injury and next year could be fine.
I'd say it's been broken. One thing for sure, that is an old buck. Look at that belly sag. Blessings..........Pastorjim
I agree, there is no telling how old that buck is. Broken or not it would be an accomplishment to kill a buck that old.
This ^^^^ regardless if he is broken or not that deer is old. Bad genetics either way for a Ontario deer! I would take him out in a heart beat!
That looks broken, but my first thought was how old that buck is... his belly and back ...h did a tank and he didn't get that old by being careless ... Also, most antler genetics are passed by the mother ... or so I have read...
Good point. I also just talked to the owner of the property and he said they have had a 10 point on the property for several years so it is possible this is the buck as he is very old which would mean it is broken off.
I got a new buck on camera last week that I know for sure is an old buck that has two broken tines. I am going to say broken as well.
Very old deer but it is broken......too bad cuz he wuda been a nice one! maybe next year he"ll be back
After talking to the property owner he claims that there has been a 10 point on the property since he has owned it. He sees the deer multiple times every year. He bought the property back in 2007 so if this is the same buck he is well over 6.5 years old. So I will be putting him down given the chance.
I may be going off on a tangent but I gotta ask. Does a deer's genetics change as it gets older? Wouldn't he pass on the same genes as he did when he was younger? I am not trying to contradict anyone, just trying to understand.
Well thae fact is he has had a lot of years passing on his genes and he is well passed his prime so he should be harvested before old age gets him. Give the up and coming bucks a chance as well. To me it is not always about one buck spreading his genes. I would much rather see diversity in the deer I hunt. That seems healthiest to me.
