Do I buy a simple quiet inverter generator or do I buy a bigger louder dual fuel that can power the community well and my wife's coffee maker too

Whole house…worst case, you have water 100yds from the house that can be filtered/boiled.

Problem is I want the generator to be portable too. My power has gone out 1 time in 5 years.

You may have answered your own question. Only other thing to check out, then, is what the community well pump would require…

230v 1/2hp motor single phase less than 5 amps. I keep rethinking it to be honest 99% of the usage will be out at the fish house. About the time I buy the small generator I will need a bigger one. When my power did go out for two days it wasn't water I was missing I missed the AC.

You want AC you better start looking at Generac with a transfer switch or check into a nice Motel for the outage duration.

After reading this, I feel very fortunate. Never been out of power for more than 16-18 hours. That was due to a blizzard that hit SE TN and NW GA in March, 1993. Out of power from night time to mid afternoon Saturday. Lines were down due to high winds. Utility companies called in their crews as they would fix one break, go to another then go back to the previous one.

I think I have a window unit in storage that I had at the last house  I would unplug the chest freezer to have AC when I sleep.

My home is all electric so a whole home was a no brainer. If the power goes out I have zero worries. I played the portable game in the past and it was a hassle. The power goes out and you wait a bit to decide if you want to haul it out and start it up. Then you have to decide what you want to power. If I want to go without power I’ll go camping.

I have electric in floor boiler, I also have a gas fired fireplace that will run on batteries so winter I am covered house will not freeze. Use lake water to flush the toilets. I was just pondering going a bit bigger just in case, not sure I can justify the extra noise and weight for something that doesn't happen often.

Our house is a split foyer. The downstairs den was used for homeschooling and has a gas heater. Not vented as we have to open the window above the heater about an inch or two. Even with no power, it puts out enough heat so it heats up the second floor with no problems.

I went with a generac, little quiet one got a good deal. Will run the coffee pot and both the fridge and the freezer. Perfect for the fish house.
