Looks like the mighty Gators have found their new coach and it is... Will Muschamp!

    http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20101211/ARTICLES/101219908/1136?Title=GATORS-HIRE-MUSCHAMP

Definitely not a "sexy" hire nor one that many people saw coming I don't think. I think it's a good hire through. He's young, energetic, SEC experience, great recruiter and a defensive mind. Obviously now hiring a new Offensive Coordinator will be HUGE, but I think this a good step.

I was hoping for a Bob Stoop or Jon Gruden hire, but I must say I am pleased with this one.

    Thoughts?

Ya.. my thoughts are that you should never use the word "sexy" again when relating it to a male coach's hire.. in any sport whatsoever.. and especially when speaking of the hallowed game of football.

    It's unbecoming of you.

I've read Major Applewhite will be following Muschamp to UF and be the OC.

I am reading that now too. A lot of Gator fans are troubled by this giving Texas' performance this year and his stints at Syracuse and Alabama are were nothing to write home about. One thing is for sure, he is better than Steve Addazzio so for that i am thankful.

You know Cody the last time UF hired a coordinator to be it's head coach things didn't work out too well. Which is why I'm kind of surprised they went with Muschamp. Don't get me wrong I think Muschamp is a better choice then Zook was, just surprised by it. I figured UF would hire someone with HC experience.

I had the same thought... I was really hoping for Dan Mullins.

That's for sure! I think the hire surprised everyone. I know I said I wanted Stoops or Gruden but in all honestly, those probably weren't realistic hires. I was hoping a hire with head coaching experience, but I think Muschamp is a good hire.

I think the Florida team's we'll see from now on will mirror the traditionally better teams from SEC West (Alabama, LSU, Auburn). I think the Gators will be more physical, stronger defenses, more north to south on offense than east and west.

The thing of it is, we won't really know how good of a hire it will be until atleast two years down the road. That's the beauty of college football!

Muschamp has also targeted Bama's D-Coordinator Kirby Smart for the same position. THAT would be a good hire. Might as well pick up Randy Shannon to coach the D-line too to form the dream coaching staff!:tu:

I was reading about Smart being a possible hire, they both are Georgia boys, and may have played together at Georgia. Remember though, Saint Nick runs the show in Tuscaloosa, and last year Georgia tried to lure Smart away, and Saban made sure that did not happen$$$$$

I think it is a good hire, he is passionate and gets in their face. But the truth in all of this (already said) is we will know nothing for a couple years...

I cannot understand why a coordinator would leave Bama to be a coordinator for FL? I would understand perhaps for a promotion... But not for the same gig.

It's a lateral move that's for sure. I am not sure on the likelihood of this happening, but it is fun to think about. Only reason I see this happening is UF can throw more money at him and he's a close friend of Muschamp's. Other than that, it's just a lateral move.

I don't have support to back this up, but I think there are few athletic programs in the country as wealthy as UF. Texas, UF, USC and Ohio State are the schools that come to mind (at least in college football) that have plenty of money to spend.

Plus Muschamp wasn't an expensive hire (I don't think his contract details have been released and won't be until tomorrow) so I'm sure Florida has a little extra change from that too. I'm sure he'll be paid well, but not like the Urban, Saban, Carroll, etc or the other coaches in the $4 million dollar range.

This hire is all dependent on the OC now.

Did a quick google search of highest grossing college athletic programs and came up with this http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/62825 from June 2009. Needless to say I'm a little surprised, with the way Bama throws money at coaches I would've thought they would have been higher on the list.

I wonder if they'll be paying him anything near the $1.3 mil a year that Malzahn is getting from Auburn to turn down the Vandy job.
