I purchased one of those cell phone charger/battery packs on the recommendation from someone here...very happy with it so far...I'm wondering if I can use this as a backup battery for my garmin rino gps somehow...either thru the mini usb port or maybe an adapter to go from a usb to the battery charging plug...any thoughts? thanks for any help!

No idea. I have the Rino 530Hcx and do a lot of hunting in areas where I don't have access to charge it though so I got a $20 battery pack that allows me to use regular batteries in it instead of the pack it came with. Now I can just carry spares with me instead of being forced to recharge the pack.

Give me product numbers of the Garmin and the Battery. On the Garmin, do you normally charge it through the mini-usb? If not, where?

    thanks guys
rick-how long will regular AA's last?
michi- its a 530 hcx gps and the unrelated battery pack is an anker that puts out 5v with either 2.4 or 4 A and NO its not powered or charged normally the the mini usb, but a "clip" that makes contact with the lithiom ion battery that has a barrel(tm?) connector

About the same time as the regular pack does. Maybe 3 full days if hunting sunup to sundown.

Whenever I have used mine hunting I always sh it off soon as I get to the stand. I don't think I have ever let it run dead but great question.

THANKS AGAIN...rick, just fyi in case you didn't know...after your suggestion-which I'll probably use!-I did a quick search and the big difference is thats less power than the li-ion battery and only transmits 2w instead of 5w..if you care about that...could be significant in certain situations, 4 miles instead of 10-12.

If you don't normally plug it into the mini usb to charge, then no, you shouldn't try to charge it that way. Too bad though, that would be a good idea. I was reading a bit about the unit, I read that the batteries can last up to 40 hrs if you're not using the radio. Is it possible to just take a spare battery pack with you? I know we try to limit the amount that we're taking into the woods, but these things are tiny, can fit in a pack easily, and depending on what part of the country you're in, and the extent of your hunts, it could literally save your life. If you're worried about it, I'd definitely look at getting an additional battery.

Because it probably actually is frozen at start up. Manufacturers will typically make the device start up, show screen, then continue to load, if they don't build products like that, the consumer (this means you) will literally take the unit apart trying to figure out why they're not seeing anything at the immediate push of a button at start up.

Remember, that little unit has more power than the computer that sent the first men to the moon.

But if you need a chuckle, this should put it in perspective for you. It's one of my personal favorites. :)
