Wow:-/ Sad story. Not a game I've heard of or would ever play. West Virginia teen reportedly killed in a game of 'dodging arrows' | Fox News Smart or Dumb?
I work about 20 miles south of where this occurred. This is a bow only hunting area and hunting is an important element of the culture here. This appears to be a prime example of kids doing something stupid without realizing the ramifications of their actions resulting in someone paying the ultimate price. A very sad and tragic outcome. I am sure that all involved including their families will never forget this event. My prayers are with the family of this young man and I hope that others can learn from this tragedy so that similar accidents can be prevented. I can't help but believe that with proper parental instruction and teaching the proper respect for any type of weapon, including this bow, that this could have been prevented. The teen shooting the bow, the teen being shot at and all who was there participating it seems amazing to me that someone didn't speak up and say "what a minute, we shouldn't be doing this".
Yes, the "game" they were playing was very dumb, and my heart goes out to that poor family, but suggesting they "could have stuck to BB guns", is even DUMBER!! BB guns put eyes out! I'm going to ASSume you're a youngster.
Much like other weapons, the unrealistic portrayal of the bow/arrow in movies and TV led to the belief that this could be done in the first place because someone couldn't tell the difference between fiction and reality or didn't take a second to think it through. Sometimes kids do dumb things, sometimes with tragic results. This is the way it's been since the beginning of time. The article and the whole situation is sad but what I found really disheartening was some of comments left.
The kid obviously wasn't very bright, 15 years old in eighth grade and dating a sixth grader. I guess they never gave her age she could also be 15 for all I know. As Forrest Gumps mom always said stupid is as stupid does. I do feel for the people he left behind and the damage to the other kids life but this is nature weeding out the stupid.
Kid had a stellar dating life going for him.. Sad story but just plain stupid, another way to give hunting a bad name
H_ll would have frozen, thawed, heated up again, and frozen a second time before my 6th grade daughter would have dated ANYONE. Anyway, back to the arrow dodging story... It's things like this that lead some people to think that the government need to save (read regulate) us from ourselves.
I wouldn't assume intelligence based on age and grade. It is not uncommon for a kid that would normally be the youngest of a class to wait a year so they will be the oldest instead.
All you guys must have been raised in the city. Back when Eisenhower and Kennedy were in office us country kids pulled all kinds of stupid stuff when we're his age, we just dodged better.
Sad story of dumb and dumber. Although I can't say I was a ton smarter as a kid. Four of us were all out playing with our BB guns one time and we were split into two groups of two. From a decent ways off, one of my friends pointed their gun at me and my friend. The friend that pointed it had a weak gun so I smarted off, go ahead. The other friend with him decided to fire one off from a much better gun hit the friend standing next to me in the stomach. He had a nice welt and bruise and that was it luckily for me and my friend that got shot. After we all got back together we agreed that was a really bad idea and never did it again. I my heart goes out to the families involved loosing a loved one unnecessarily and in a idiotic way. Kids just think of really, really bad ideas sometimes and aren't mature enough to think past the given moment to the ramifications of bad decisions. We didn't with the BB gun at the time. Additionally parents need to do a better job of allowing access to and supervision of using potentially deadly weapons.
