Is there one that's better than another or do they all suck? Seems like most of them get more negative reviews then they do positive.
To be honst, unless you buy one of the $200 ones, they are pretty flimsy. I bought a cheap on from Cabela's years ago and it bent and didn't hold up worth a darn. Cheap steel mostly. I salvaged the wheels and welded up my own, close to the same as the one I bought, plus a little reinforcing here and there. I use mine mostly for hauling feed, etc., into hard to reach places, but only have used it once for a deer.
I'm sure all the store bought 2 wheel carts are basically the same...my $50 model from Sportsmans' Guide seems to be about the same quality (meh) as other ones I've seen at BassPro for over 100. If you take some time and replace the factory hardware with nylok nuts, bushings, and fab some hubcaps or replace the spoke wheels with solid hubs (sticks get caught all the time in spokes) you end up with a better quality rig for about 3/4 the price. Depending on your hunting situation, sometimes carts are more trouble than they're worth. Sometimes I use it, sometimes I don't.
I understand. Picked up some new land this year and the landowner is sensitive to "motor vehicle" traffic. I mentioned the use of the ATV and his eyes grew to the sizr of softballs. I got him to let me use the field access roads with the pickup but that's it. It is still quite the walk down into where I want to place a feeder and a couple double ladder stands. I also figured it might come in handy as I am not getting any younger. These kids make for a lot of extra work. You will find that out soon enough sir! I hope his sensitivity drops after he gets to know us a little better throughout the season.
I'm pretty much just here to give useless tips and advice. But if'n you kill a big deer, give me a jingle and I'll be there to help drag
How about you just leave the truck here? I have a little Chev Cobalt you can drive back and forth! It gets like 45 MPG.
Use a sled, like the ones kids use in the snow. They make some that are pretty deep and can easily fit most average sized deer in them. Then just put holes around the outside lip and take extra rope to tie the deer to the sled. Just an idea.
I was going to suggest one of these. I have one of the "Dead Sleds" that roll up and they make dragging a deer a lot easier and help keep leaves and such out of the body cavity as well. Haven't seen them anywhere for a couple years though, looks like they were replaced by the molded "sled".
I am going to check out the cart at Menards. Seems to be reasonably priced & available at our store. I like the idea of the sled. Just don't know if it will work as well for hauling 50lbs of grain, big stands, etc....
Big Game Products Carry-All Game Cart | Scheels This is the one I have. It is plenty strong for my use. I loaded it up with a ladder and a hang on stand with steps and trimming gear to haul in a half mile a couple of years ago. The cart did a way better job than this out of shape old man. It folds up and the wheels come off so stores quite easily in my pick up. It is tough pulling through tall weeds as it sits fairly low. I put my safety harness on and hook it up short to help me drag it along and that seem to help a bit. Any way you look at it, these are tough work.
Picked up the cart at Menards. Good grief the thing stinks to high heaven! I put it together inside and it about ran the entire family out the the house. Not sure why some rubber stinks so bad when other rubber doesn't. I put it out on the back deck. I sure hope the smell goes away or I won't be able to haul that stinky SOB in my SUV. Seems to be made about like every other cart of have seen / used. I can see some upgrades in the future on the hardware.
I cut the seats out of one of those carts you pull kids in behind a mountain bike and it works awesome. pulled out some 150lb gutted deer no problem
