Thanks for the examples, Trial. I'll take your advise under consideration. One of the hardest parts about broadhead research is sorting through all the opinions and examples on both sides. I had similar negative experience last year with a DRT head. I won't ever buy them again due their (in my opinion/experience) flawed design. However there is a definite majority that think they are great. Sorry to hijack your thread, Bear Bow Shooter.
What's your take on the NAP Hellrazor? Are they made similar to the Montec or the VPA? I used Montec's on my first buck. Broke rib on entry and exit, double lung but did not pass thru. Buck went 40 yards and fell over. Blade was dull but completely intact on arrow recovery. I've since switched to the Montec CS for more durability however I've never had an issue with the Montec blades on their own. Not challenging your opinion on the Montec's, just curious on your thoughts with the Hellrazor too and sharing my experience.
I stay clear of the hell razors as well. They are welded and I don't see the point of having welds when I can a fully machined one piece head. Honestly I stay with the VPA because the are high carbon steel that's is heat treated and fully machined. I would rather a little more and know I have a higher level of material and workmanship.
I've personally had great success with Montec G5s and my friends have had success with the Havoc and T3 but I personally prefer fixed blades. Here's the exit wound of a properly placed arrow using a G5 that I made on a button buck (oops - thought it was a doe ) from a few years ago. Left a blood trail like you wouldn't believe and was within eyesight.
carbon steel montec is very sharp and takes a great edge. had a small buck down in 20 yards. have not tried muzzy trocar so can't speak to it. highly recommend the CS montec
Some of my close hunting buddies really love the Carbon Steel Montec. I shot the original for a year and they were dull out of the box. Sharpened them, but it was meticulous because they refused to hold an edge. I found a pack of the Trocars on sale so I bought them. They fly identically to my QADs (my preferred head, though the Solid broadheads are intriguing) and the pack I bought were VERY sharp. Have not killed anything with the Trocars, but I've seen the damage a plain Jane Muzzy can do out of a 40# bow, so I don't doubt the Trocars at all.
Are the VPA's as easy to resharpen as the Montec's? If they are, I'd like to try some and see how they fly.
I haven't tried the stainless montec but used snuffer ss one year and had the same experience. Hard to sharpen and wouldn't hold an edge. That is why I tried the carbon steel...worked great.
Alright, went to cabelas yesterday and got the trocars. These little things really do look Bad to the Bone.
I bought Montecs a few years ago. I was drawn by their one-piece design and they flew well out of my bow. However, they were incredibly dull out of the box. I had a difficult time getting them to sharpen to the standard I wanted. Slick Tricks are much sharper so I went back to them. I shouldn't have to sharpen anything on a $40 pack of broad heads.
A couple years ago I tried some Montecs. I was impressed with the way they flew, not so impressed with the sharpness, their ability to hold an edge, or their durability.
