I've been shooting G5 Montecs, 100 gr., for a while and like 'em as my fixed blade option. Now G5 is offering an upgraded version - Montec CS (carbon steel) - which is allegedly 25% sharper. Anybody shootin' these things? My stainless Montecs fly, cut and resharpen just dandy but I'm always open to new stuff, if it's a genuine improvement. They are about 10 bucks more than my stainless Montecs, which is already bad enuf at about 32 bones for 3 of 'em around these parts. Any actual user data would be appreciated.

    Howdy Nealz,

Luckily during my trip to the annual ATA show I was kind enough to be given a 3 broadhead pack for testing and review.

So, to answer you question, I am going to be using these heads on an upcoming hog hunt. Out of the package, these broadheads are pretty sharp but the nice part about the Montecs to begin with was the ability to REALLY put a sharp edge on them and go hunt.

Some of the benefits of the new CS version are listed in a blog I wrote up for this site:

    http://www.bowhunting.com/blog/post/2009/01/12/New-Montec-CS-Broadhead-from-G5-Outdoors.aspx

I plan on giving a full rundown after my trip in the main bowhunting section. This review is probably going to encompass many of the new heads I was able to receive at the ATA show and rate them according to the performance of tried and true heads most hunters already know about, e.g. Slick Trick, Magnus Stinger, Muzzy MX-3, etc.

Hope this helps and I'll keep you updated on how the Montec CS heads performed.

You got a sweet gig brother! I'll be looking forward to some actual field test and hunt data. To comment on GMMAT's observations as well, I also wonder about the edge holding ability of carbon steel versus stainless. That said, I'm fanatical about my sharps already and always give 'em some time on the stone after every use. I will say that the stainless Montecs are about the sharpest out-of-the box blades I've used. Hopefully the new CS will continue this tradition.

It must be a G5 thing. I shoot Strykers and I swear even the plastic they came in was sharp! Seriously though, my heads were dangerously sharp out of the pack.

G5 Montecs are the only broadhead I use. They shoot so true and are razor sharp right out of the package. I've never even sharpened them after opening a pack up...I'm too lazy for that! I love these things since they are one solid piece so nothing can fall apart or go wrong. You know the rule K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid). I've killed deer just fine with the regular Montecs so I don't need another 25%...I'll keep my $10, thanks!
