I was tripping over my dads foot steps at the age of 3 years old baiting bear so I figured It was time to get my 4 year old daughter In the mix. My daughter Lydia and the gang on her 1st bear baiting trip. For the 1st time since 1994 I won't be bear hunting, I didn't get drawn for a license. 4 of the 6 people In our group did so I'm very fortunate to still be able to go and do what I love. The baiting part to me Is just as exciting as the hunt Itself. The start of our 5 hour drive north. I told Lydia she better get some sleep on the way. Ya right!! She was too excited to sleep as you can tell by the smile on her face when her eye's were closed In the 2nd picture here. A few pictures on the way once we started hitting bear country In the northern part of Minnesota. Here we were on our 10th bait of the 11 we've got out. I damn near forgot to take the camera out so out It came on this bait and the next one. I would've been pissed If I would've forgot. There's only one 1st, specially with your kids. This bait happened to be the only bait that didn't get hit. Awesome 1st check, best we've ever had In 20+ years of bear hunting. A few pics of Lydia trucking In and out of our bait trail to and from the bait. Our last bait we checked. We did this one this morning around 10:00 before the 5 hour trip back home. Here's some of the gang. As you can see we use our legs when baiting. I can't stand 4 wheelers In the woods. This bait Is about an 1/8th mile In. Though this Isn't normal with our baits this bait Is a nice easy walk on the logging road before we jump 200 yards Into the woods but man were the deer flys terrible on this bait. I wish more of our baits were this easy to walk In and out of but then we would be putting up with every other bear hunter In the woods too. Chances are someone else will jump on this logging road anyway with their 4 wheelers and bait It somewhere even though they know were baiting It. This Is the bad thing about the area we hunt. People have no respect for other hunters. The walk In. 1st picture here Is a bear bed. This bed was here before we even baited this bait last weekend. Another bear bedded In the same exact spot last year after we baited this same bait. Same bear I wonder? Could be but who know's.
My daughter Lydia and her cousins helping out. This was so awesome to see. A dads dream I tell ya!! She was kind of skeptic at 1st on our 1st few baits but after that she wanted to help. One proud dad here!!!
She is growing like a weed. Hard to believes she is 4 already. Looks like a great trip !! Glad you had a good time. Just one question... that is her back pack in the truck... right ??? :p Tim
Awesome pics there sir, thats cool. she looks like she is having a blast. I hope to bag my first bear this year sometimes I see one while deer hunting. I have never took one it cost so much to get a rug. Its like $1200.00 bucks here. but they sure taste good
Nicely Done! Passing it on to the kids might even be more fun than all the years hunting myself up to this point...exciting times! Keep us posted on your groups success...not enough bear kills posted on this site.
Great to see the young ones getting involved in the outdoors...good luck on smokey a big bruin this season Schultzy!
Thanks everyone!! My daughter was asking me this morning when were going back up bear baiting. I told her soon.
10-4 that one Craig!! It's probably a good thing I didn't get drawn for a bear license this year. This way I'm able to focus much more with her on her 1st bear experience. My daughter will also be making the trip come hunting when It opens September 1st. Hopefully someone arrows a bear with a great shot (no doubter) so I can take her with on her very 1st blood trail. Good times are coming!!!
