Finally had some great weather to hunt in. Temperatures dropped down into the low 30's. I have had my decoy a couple of times, just haven't seen many deer. Went to the farm yesterday (first trip of the year) was walking to my stand and before I could get there I could see the does out in the field. So I take rest on the gate hoping that maybe there was a buck in the area. Finally after about 45 minutes they go back to the bedding area. About 45 minutes later I see them in another field and behind them coming out of the bedding area was a small buck. That evening I went back with the decoy (as a doe). When the does came into the field they immediately came over to the decoy. The biggest of the 4 came up to it within 10 yards of it and just stood there as if she was saying get the heck out of here this is my field. She shook her head at it and at one point I thought she was going to attack it. Had them at 35 yards for more than 20 minutes. The bucks didn't show but I will be back there tomorrow evening. Anyone from the Southwest VA area seeing any signs of chasing or any other activity.
Sounds like a cool experience. I've been wanting to try out a decoy but just haven't made the leap. I've been seeing some small bucks chasing does and a decent 3.5 year old pushing some does around the other day. Things should pick up some this week but the weather is warming back up to the 70's.
Yep, the weather will definitely play a factor in this weeks hunting. The small buck that I did see Saturday was in an area that those does are hanging around. My guess is that he isn't staying there for no reason. I hope to see him chasing them a little this week. I have pictures of a drop tine 9 pointer. My hopes is that the smaller buck will start chasing the does and the big buck will come in and push him aside. Hope I am there when it happens. Good Luck
