I am going to start a fruit tree plot. I want to have apples and pears. I want the late pears and the early pears. Basically, I would like to have variety, but I want most of them to be falling later in the year, so they come during the season. Can anyone recommend what types the deer like, and what types fall later in the year. Feel free to share any experiences or advice for a plot of this type. Thanks!

I don't know a great deal about fruit trees, but I do know they can be temperamental if you don't plant the right tree for the zone you live in. I'd start by researching the trees that do best for the area that you are in, then narrow it down from there. Good luck, should be a great hunting spot 4-5 years down the road if done right!

Pear trees will bear fruit faster than apple trees like mentioned follow the zone and plant at least two of each kind so they bloom at the same time.

I have some pear trees and they are dropping now. The deer are eating them like crazy. A couple of my apple trees are not doing well this year. I look at fruit trees as part of the mix and really as a food source that keeps them hanging around prior to season. I don't think of them as a food source during the season and rely upon other food plot strategies from soybeans, oats, clover and late season things like turnips which they tend to eat after it gets cold. Just my experience with fruit trees. My number one nut tree if I was planting would be a chestnut tree. I have three in my yard and when they start dropping you can not find one not eaten in the morning. You have to collect what you want before nightfall.

Make sure you put fence around any trees you plant for several years. Deer will eat any and all buds off a little tree they can get to and will kill your tree
