A while ago on here I think I saw a thread about the frontal shot on an Elk being a better shot than people think. Has anyone every tried this on a Whitetail? Obviously this wouldn't be your first choice or a far shot option, but at 20 yards?
I won't take it from a tree stand...no matter what people say it is still lower percentage shot even from the ground but on level ground and spotted but ready to release an arrow I would slide it in possibly...would depend on a lot of factors...on the ground though it is about the worst shot I would consider taking, however I have been told by some I wait too long for the perfect shot....however my recovery to lost ratio is let's just say better than theirs.
Hmm Just wanted to hear some ideas, I doubt I will ever take this shot, mostly because I don't know where to aim.
Shove that thing right down the middle and bust the heart...it has the chance for extremely quick fatality...
For the frontal shot you need. 1.low position, not tree stand 2.heavy hitting arrow for proper penetration With my Insanity 80 pound I use a 570grain arrow at 298 fps ( 110 footpounds) Easy pass through front shoulder , heart and hind leg . Impala 90 pound carcass weight.
Says the guy that miss 50 and 70 and 100. Sorry pal If I don't listen to you on this topic Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
So are you trying to put the arrow through that gap right under his neck, or hit those arteries in his neck? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yes. When executed properly the arrow will take out the top of the heart along with every major artery in the body, incidentally you will hit the liver and stomach as well. If the deer makes it over 50 I would be blown away. My elk this year lived less than 10 seconds and made it 30 yards.
Even though it is a frontal shot , you always aim for the heart and lungs. If you hit the arteries on the way , it is a bonus.
On a true full frontal shot it would be tough to hit the lungs and heart together. On a quartering-to angle this would be much easier.
HaHaHahahaha.... thanks for digging up bones. Hopefully you feel better now. This is from 105 yards, kneeling with a full pack at the range. DIY OTC SOLO BACKCOUNTRY PUBLIC LAND BOWHUNTER
I took a quartering frontal shot with my shotgun while a buck was running down the fence like that I was sitting on, then another broadside side shot as he ran by. I ended up shooting through the arteries in his next, heart. And bullet lodged in his back hip, then both lungs with second shot. He made it 30 yards. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
And THAT is not a deer or elk. lol To the OP, I passed a frontal shot at 20 yards on a 183" NT whitetail a few years ago that we found the next spring locked up with another buck dead. Even knowing his eventual outcome, I'm still glad I did not take that shot. Its just not a shot worth taking in my opinion. Way too many variables.......no matter how big the trophy.
I won't take that shot, broadside or nothing for me. I concur with Mr. Fletch (good to see ya back btw)
