Keep an eye on Amazon sales Mountain House. You can get a bucket for like $50 sometimes which comes out to about $6 per meal. That's pretty cheap IMO for a meal that is better for you and tastes better than fast food (not to mention the JIC-abilities of it.)

And let's be honest after 30 years what's another couple?

The youtuber I posted a link to earlier opens and reviews old MRE's. He's opened and eaten parts of original WWII MRE's before. The ciggs are a trip. Some of the italian MRE's come with an alcoholic beverage.

Watched a couple. Some of his comments are pretty funny. Hope he's got anti-botulism medicine handy.
Does give me confidence that the Mountain House stuff will last for at least as long as advertised. Stuff that was made in early 80s is still good as new- think of how far technology has come since then.

I find it interesting to see what is in the old and different MRE's, there's not that much interesting about that guy specifically except he's crazy enough to eat some of it, lol.

No.... No they don't. Freeze dried food lasts decades, MRE's are much shorter.

I don't keep it around for what ifs, I keep it around for use. I go through 100+ Mountain House packs a year as much backpacking as I do. I grow tired of them by the end of the fall for sure.

Mountain house sucks, so does backpackers pantry and all the rest of them. But for what we need it for there isn’t a better option. I am not sure I would be hoarding the stuff for an emergency but if you use it in other venues...like back country hunting ect there is no reason to not keep some around. I know it last years but I still rotate it out. Keep it in a covered plastic tub or container and it out last you....

I like to be prepared, in business as in life its a good thing. I keep mine in a plastic tote under the stairs. It's not fine dining but a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon really breathed some life into my beef and noodles experience the other night.

I ate some old mre's in 1999 on the Banadad ski trail in the bwca after the blowdown we spiked out for 3 days. Old enough to not have heaters. Nothing like cutting miles of line in the rain and eating cold mre's 3 times a day.

What're you talking about? MH might not be Michelin-grade but it's the best of its genre. Never had a MH meal I would say "sucked." Some are admittedly much better than others, tho. I wouldn't want to live on it forever but for a week or 2 at a time in primitive conditions it doesn't get any better.

...and also admittedly I'd not want to share a tent with anyone after a pouch of chili mac.

your lucky to have such a unrefined palate. MH is terrible, as is almost all rehydrated commercialy producued meals. Necessity convenience and lightweight are the only reason i go near the stuff. From a culnary stand point its terrible. Its sucks.

    Hah! Don't tell my wife...
I'm just comparing apples to apples- I'm not saying that I'd choose MH over any comparable fresh-cooked meal; but they are head and shoulders above any other freeze dried pouch/can on the market. And IMO better than a lot of fast food for that matter.

I think the MRE's I ate in the 80's are just expiring now. So, they do last for decades. Talk about some lousy meals. Dehydrated beef or pork patty with a dehydrated potato patty. YUM!

We gave those to our Honduran partners. They ate EVERYTHING!! Including the dried coffee. Didn't make coffee-just ate the stuff.
