As I'm in the stand this morning, I heard what I thought was a squirrel climbing a tree, although a bit louder which is why it caught my attention. To my surprise, it's a grey fox. I watched him climb up maybe 15 feet, poke his head in a hole, scurry back down and continue on his way. Did anyone else know that foxes can climb? That has been the highlight of my morning so far.

Thats how I got in to trapping as a young boy. I was walking through our farm and saw what appeared to be a dog hanging in a tree. As I got closer I realized it was a red fox hanging upside down in the fork of a branch with a #2 trap on his foot. I climbed up the tree and retrieved the fox and the trap. Since whoever was trapping did not put their name on the trap (which is the law in Ohio), I had a new trap and a fox! My grandpa and I took the fox to the local dealer and I got $80 for him which I gave right back after buying a dozen #2 traps! Grandpa took me out and taught me how to catch fox and coon and the rest is history. What I wouldnt give to walk that trap line one more time with my grandfather.

I'll bet that was fun to see. That's why I love bowhunting I get to watch nature in a natural, undisturbed setting. That is so enjoyable to me

Yup. Ground hogs climb trees too. Same thing for me I was sitting in the stand and watched a ground hog run across the field and scurry up an oak tree like it was nothing.

Gray Fox is the only canine with the ability to climb trees (not talking about trees that have low branches that dogs and staircase up). Gray Fox is a interesting critter, more cat-like than dog in my opinion.

My grandfather had an irish setter that could climb trees to get the apples off( he lived for playing ball and thought the apples were his toys) I'm talking about 15-20 feet straight up the thing like a cat.

Can they climb a tree that's straight up and down or does it have to be growing at a slant or something? This is really interesting to me

I have them around my neighborhood as well, I had a pair that would show up on a trail camera in my back yard regularly. Jus this past week I had one run across the street in front of me by my house.

I too never knew that until one morning when I was sitting in my stand just as it was breaking daylight. I saw a fox coming through a stand of pines and the next thing I knew, up the tree he goes. It was a pretty cool sight.

It was bad enough one time at dusk when a raccoon came out the middle of the tree next to where I was climbed up.(5 feet away)
