Anyone climbed one? Ill be tackling the highest point in the Rocky Mountains next Saturday at 14.4k and change... Just looking to see what I'm in for. Lol anyone who has done it before, will I survive? My fatass was huffing just climbing to 12k last weekend, so this should get interesting.
My wife and I will be attempting out first one (Mt. Quandary in the Breckenridge area) on the 9th of July. I will be interested in hearing how you fare. So which one are you climbing? I don't know which one is the highest and too lazy too look it up at the moment.
Mt. Elbert is the highest, and supposedly one of the easiest to climb to boot. 5k in elevation gain is a pretty substantial hike though, ill report back on just how miserable it was for me! Lol
Mt. Elbert is a relatively easy "climb", it's really a hike. The elevation will probably get you, but it will still be awesome. Post some pics.
I did both Whistler and the Grand ten years ago. But neither break 14. 13.7 is the Grand that was enough for me lol
I "climbed" pikes peak in a car Being up at that elevation is freaky. It messed with me. Good luck, I bet its awesome!
A few years ago out In Colorado elk hunting I hit the 13,000 foot range I believe on a solo hunt one evening. I believe I climbed 4 thousand feet to get there. I had like 20 pounds on my back.
A day or two of acclimation makes a big difference, get up to 8000 - 8500 hundred feet and hike a day or so and get your body acclimated to the oxygen levels, you will be fine.
This! I try an go to my dads house two days before our elk hunt. His place is at 6500ft. Walk around a day or two an hiking at 9000-12000 ft isn't bad at all. I've went from my house (450ft) to 10500 in one day and started hunting two years ago. I spent all that night an the next day pukeing my guys out. Never again.
Thanks for the tips guys. I'm living at 6-7k for the summer so I'm not worried about acclimating as much as the physical aspect (I'm certainly not in the best of shape) Ill post pics of my failure or success either way lol
I am taking my oldest son out to Nevada to hike some peaks this late summer before he goes back to college. I think we will only be topping out in the 11,000's. I will be anxious to hear your report and look forward to some pictures. Best of luck!
As promised fellas. Wasn't too bad, left just before 6am and was back by noon.. 10 miles and 9k+ in elevation change. Lungs got the workout on the way up, feet and knees on the way down. Pretty steep hike but no technical climbing required.
