It not "your" buck because you didn't kill a buck and recover it. You simply found a dead head that could've died from a number of reasons. I agree that skull looks to be a minimum of 1 year old Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Just curious what you were wanting to hear? That everyone said it was your deer? A guy answered how he felt, he feels that deer has been dead longer. Which by the way by the looks of it i agree with him. Also no one said anything about you not trying to find it.
To be fair, I think you should go back and read those posts sequentially. I don't see where Mike was out of line anywhere. Mike answered with a reasonable response and got called a dumbass before he made the prick comment.
I took his post in response to the claim it was two years old as a simple "why he didn't think that was correct"...not as a way to say the opinion wasn't asked for and/or welcome. Seems like had that been the case, his response would have been something different rather than a logical, "this is why I think that's wrong" response. In return he was told he was either funny or a dumbass and then reminded (unnecessarily) that he was the one that asked for opinions and thoughts. I don't see how his responses, in any way conflict with what he asked for in the OP. He seemed to be asking for a discussion of his situation, which is what was happening until one party didn't like an opposing point of view and started flinging names around willy nilly.
I'm a fairly new hunter working on my 5th year I shot a small buck (first buck) during gun week searched and lost track on it. I was taking a stand down a walked threw the opposite side of the woods and found what looks fairly close to what I shot piled up I don't know how long it take to decay so I was asking Mike4christ
While I don't agree with MoBuckChaser's tact, I do agree that the dead head looks to be from a previous season. I found one that looked very similar to that one(as far as condition) that I know was shot two season previous. If the dead dear was in a thorn bush, you could have easily walked right past it early in the season. There was a dead deer less than 10 yards from one of my stands. I never noticed it until all the grass had died and the leaves had fallen off the trees.
I would agree that by the appearance of the dead head I don't think it is from this last season. And while you may have been through that area earlier, you probably were not looking for a skull and bones. What is often said about Shed Hunting, is you can't walk through the woods like you are scouting or tracking because you are looking for different things. When tracking a deer, you are looking for blood, or a big brown lump on the ground, not just bones so your mind can pass over something because it is not what you are looking for.
I have found lots of dead heads over the last 35 years of hunting and being in the outdoors. Over a 5 month period like you are talking about, many factors would play into this: Did it sit under water for along period of time? Under snow? Out in the open? Flooded or drug to the location? Lots of rodents? Carcass found immediately by scavengers? Etc. I guess my point is, I would look like an idiot if I claimed I knew exactly what a 5 month old dead head should like. At least in the future I know where I can post some pictures up and the experts can tell me the date of death.
