Went to one of my late season only spots to hunt. I debated on which spot to sit as there are two good spots. As the hunt unfolded... I picked the wrong spot. The last half hour ... 4 does and a fawn show up. 2 minutes later... I see a big rack cresting the hilltop in the same spot the does came out. Big 5x5 with quite a few stickers. Nice tall tines for our area... good mass... good beam length that curl up at the ends. He will hit 150 easy. The does closed the distance to a 100 yards and then headed north to the other spot. The spot I wished I was sitting in !! LOL He was doing a bit of chasing... but not too serious. I thought about the can call but with all the does... I doubt I could have pulled him away. The does were jumpy and it just spelled disaster to try it to me. So I pulled out my crappy digital camera and proceeded to get a few crappy pictures of him. The batteries died from the cold in short order. I hate this camera but it's all I've got. The picture does not do him justice in the least. It is the best one out of the bunch. You can't see the stickers and it gives the appearance of shorter tines then he really has. The only thing this buck lacks is width as he only looks to be around the 17" mark. He is without a doubt the best buck I have seen all season. Tim
No... not today. SE winds are cruddy for morning hunts for me... so I didn't go out this morning. Was suppose to take the wife shopping today and weaseled out of it so I could hunt this afternoon. She wasn't a real happy camper but the big buck sighting softened her a bit. Wind was perfect for this spot. If the wind holds... I will try to weasel out of taking her shopping tomorrow. Buck hunting and keeping a wife happy gets real tough this time of year. Thank God she is a good, forgiving wife !! Tim
Tim, sitting in the wrong spot is something I'm best at. At least your seeing antlers. I have not seen good antlers since Oct! Keep at it.
Keep showing pics like that and you might get me back in the mood to go back out for another hunt or two! Good luck on that monster!
I am going into where the does bed in the morning hoping he is still tagging along. I am hoping I need help dragging him out. I can get Tyler for that now that he is home on break. I really need someone to take the wife out shopping tomorrow afternoon !! What time can you be here for that buddy ?? I could have her meet you in Grand Forks !! :P I'll text you if I do any good !! You really need to get your butt over here for some hunting. We could have covered both spots tonight. Somebody would have had a very close encounter.
