I spotted a few morels while I was chasing turkeys Saturday morning. I went back after hunting shut down at 1:00 to collect my prizes. Got 65 total, but not a lot of the big yellows yet, mostly the smaller grey ones. We need a good rain to pop the big guys out.
That's awesome, John! Do you find them in certain areas moreso than others? I've never really spent too much time in the woods this time of year, but I wouldn't mind looking for some shrooms like that.
I find most of them on my place around elm trees particularly in bottoms where the soil is a little damp. That being said I have also found them around sicamore and cottonwood trees before. Old fruit trees also have been known to produce them. You just cannot predict where they will pop up from one place to another. I have found some in the middle of a field, but typically around some type of tree in the woods.
From the sounds of it, people here in Illinois have been having a bit more luck finding shrooms this week. I sure wish I was back at home so I could looks for a couple hours. Check out the size of these!! Here's a short little story too... http://www.prairiestateoutdoors.com/index.php?/pso/article/as_the_mushrooms_pop/
Still hardly any reports in my area. Most people have already given up. Many locals have a long list of people wishing to buy them, but are unable to fill the orders. I have heard that those who have them to sell are getting anywhere from $80-$100 a pound. It's usally around $15-$20 a pound here.
I have only found three and did that today! I dont sell mine I give them to a buddy of mine! I hate mushrooms!
