What protein bars are you guys taking. I remember reading where Greg/MO buys them in bulk at sams. I take Whey, but I do not like fooling with it at work or on the go. The current protein bar I have are full of sugar. Thanks in advance for your help.
My go to bar is the Clif bar, but they are mainly for energy, not so much protein. I know that Atkins bars only have 1g of sugar, with about 15g of protein, those were the only bars I have found in stores with less than 10g of sugar. You might be able to find some online at site such as bodybuilding.com, they are usually the cheapest price as well. Protein bars can get expensive.
If you are looking for protein, bars aren't the way to go. It takes a 180 calories or thereabouts to get only 12-15 g of protein. If you buy the whey protein powder and mix it with water, you can get about 25-30 g of protein for only about 100 or so calories. If you are doing it for energy, then the bars are probably the way to go.
What's your workout regime consist of? Are you trying to add bulk? I lift 4-5 times a week and have stopped the whey protein all together. Unless you're on steroids or shoot insulin after you take the protein supplement, it is of little use to take a protein supplement. In order for your post-workout protein to be utilized you should consume it with a 4:1 carb : protein ratio. Personally, I saw zero gains with a whey protein. I stick with my SuperPump 250 and that's it. I drink lots of green tea, water, and eat 4-5 lean meals a day. Do it!
I'm 45 yrs old. I've never gone through a bulking cycle. At my age, cutting seems to be the way I go.....lol. Protein is AWESOME for cutting. I highly suggest it.
Protein is awesome. Consuming it from a supplement, however, is a waste of money. The bigger the bottle usually equals the bigger the scam.
You may disagree with me rednas, but you are in the minority who believe this. I'm not saying you are wrong, just that it goes against conventional thinking.
Already said, but if your trying to take in significant amounts of protein it's tough to do with a bar. I'm taking in roughly 300gr of protein a day right now (on a 50/30/20 split) and it would be impossible without Whey Protein. I'm taking GNC Whey Isolate 28 partly because it's the best tasting stuff I've found (can drink with just water and it's good), but also because most whey has a lot of cholesterol in it, and I need to be careful with that. I'm still able to take in 300gr of protein a day yet stay below 350ml of cholesterol that way. A couple things I do to make this easier to do through the day is package 3x sandwich bags with 2x scoops in each, and throw in my lunch bag. I also got a shaker bottle with a wire wisk ball inside it at GNC for about $8.
I never bought into the powders too much when I lifted. Cans of tuna were my protein "supplement". I also used to eat a TON of eggs. Usually only eating half the yolks of whatever amount I made to eat. Right now the only bars I eat are "Zone" bars. They are tasty & I can get them decently priced. they aren't really a protein or energy bar, but they hit the spot for breakfast or a mid-day snack while hunting.
Per Isaiah's post above, he intro'd the gatorade bars to me during sits in the stand, easy to munch on. I eat half of one right after my morning workout, just to get some carbs/calories back in until I can get to work and eat breakfast. I'm not much of a bar person for pre & post workouts other than that. Too many sugars and fillers. Your best bet is to eat a turkey sandwhich, some sort of mix of non-processed protein/carb before and after the workout. Post workout PB sandwich and a banana is really good as well.
Exactly. I think most people on here are novice weightlifters at best. Meaning, it's not their job. I don't see too many Ronnie Coleman's or Jay Cutlers on here. There are two questions that can be asked..How much protein can the digestive system absorb into the bloodstream from a meal and How much protein can your body actually utilize? Your body CAN break down almost all the protein you put into your body but your muscles CAN'T utilize all that protein. So I ask whats the point? There is a suppression of hunger side to the argument but like I've said before, your muscles can only do so much. Eating a lean protein diet will get you where you want to go. I would suggest reading this blog on the subject.... http://nutritionhelp.blogspot.com/2007/08/how-much-protein-do-we-really-need-to.html
Yeah I thought .75 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight was the target if you were trying to build muscle, a lot less if you weren't.
I'm in the process of dropping some weight right now, and it was recommended I do this on a 2400 calorie diet, and for the first 30 days keep those calories 50% protein, 30% Carbs, and 20% fats......essentially to drop weight and try to not drop too much muscle. Seems to be working pretty darn good too......
I'm still waiting for the "I'm skinny as all hell, and I need to gain weight, but nothing works" program... I've done Protien shakes, 4000calories per day, and other things, but seriously, nothing worked.
I remember those days, then I turned 30 and it was like someone flipped a switch and all of a sudden I have to watch everything I eat.
People lift weights for different reasons. Not everyone is trying to add a lot of muscle mass or "get big". Not saying I agree or disagree with what you've stated so far referring protein, but people lift for different reasons, and that can require different eating plans.
Understandable Vito, but the context of what I was saying was most people lifting weights don't need massive loads of protein like was mentioned before. Professional weightlifters have a reason to take 200-300 grams of protein a day, amateurs not so much.
