Gottchya. I think it's pretty cool that our state record Non-typ is 10 1/2 years old. I bet He was bigger a couple years earlier though. The other buck I mentioned had over 40 points at his biggest (9 1/2). I think it had 42 or 44 scoreable points. Sometimes my memory gets stuck in nuetral. It sucks getting old. LOL I don't think they ever measured him. He was a dandy though. There was another buck I remember though that was born in captivity to a healthy mother and was given great food like his parents from day one. His parents were not the result of any specialized breeding, but were second (3rd?) generation deer originally taken from the wild. His dad was a nice racked middle aged buck, but nothing special. Junior (1 1/2 year old) didn't look like he was going to be a very large racked buck when he got older considering his less than steller genetic heritage and because he only had about a 4" spike on one side and a 3" spike on the other with a 1" brow tine. But at 5 1/2 he was a 200"+ HOG! I think he netted some where between 201"+ and 205" net. I can't remember the exact score, but his rack looked bigger than it scored and he was a real pig. He was part of a study on antler genetics.
I thought the same thing, but even though he looks like he is in a better condition at 6 1/2 I think he looks like even more of a tank at 7 1/2, but I would be more than happy to shoot him at 4 1/2 on up! I think he really starts to take on that fully mature look at 5 1/2. I would love to get one like him this year.
Everyone always seems to catch that:D I never tire of seeing this series. His body mass is what I can't get over...geez...an absolute stud!
I remember reading the magazine article as well. I don't remember reading that the buck started out as a captive buck. I remember the photographer was not allowed to hunt the buck, but don't recall why.
