I came across an app called "My Tracks" that is perfect for outdoors man.

It records where you walked and maps it out on an areal view displayed on your phone.

Then once you are done recording, it displays how far you walked, avg speed, time it took, elevation change. Not to mention you can place markers.

    Best of all...it was free.:D

Now I don't have to go buy that GPS.

If I ever figure out how to do screen shots on the phone, I'll post a couple up.

Are you using the Droid, or another Android phone?

I can help you out if it is the Hero... lol. I can look into it if it is another Android phone though.

    LMK.

Are you on the Android Forums at all?
They can help you with the screen shots...

I'm rooted, so I have been using the app called "Shoot Me".

I downloaded it, and it does look pretty cool, I will post pics later if you don't.

This might help you. You are going to need the Android SDK.
I know there are other ways, but like I said, I'm rooted, so I jsut used the Shoot me app...

    I'm afraid to root mine.

I found a link last night that had 3 things I had to download but it was to close to bed time to get into it.

    And I am on droidforums.net

Afraid of what? If it's that you will brick the phone, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just wait a little while. I did mine here at work, before lunch, and I'm computeretarded!!! No joke. I am very limited on what I can do with a computer.

Other than the SDK, and following the steps in that link, it's real easy. The installs are usually quick.

    Yup

But if its really nothing, I'll think about it.

Is it really worth doing though?

Only if you want to be one of the cool kids... :D

Kidding. It is if you like messing with things, I did it so I could take off the Sprint Bloatware, and take screen shots, and utillize a different ROM, but now I can store my apps on my SD card, and save space on my phone.... I like the Sense UI, but I love the way the Freshhh Rom looks, feels, and runs. But, I am still waiting for my 2.1 release in the next couple months....
Mainly just to get more control over my phone, and be able to take screen shots (easily). (Sprint crap.)

The only downside I have found, is that you probably have to un-root, or un-ROM, (one of the two) to get the updates to install on the phone, when they are released.

EDIT: If any of that made you "WANT" to root, and ROM... then check this out. (if you are still worried about doing it the olde fashioned way)

EDIT2: Another thing I just thought of... I haven't used it yet, but you can get your phone to become a Wireless tether, when you root. IDK if that interests you either, but its just another one of the perks... (Wireless tether = hooking up phone to laptop, and becomeing a mobile internet source...)

    A) I assume this is the one that lays out the lines you have traveled?

    B) Not sure what this one does...Altitude/Length I would guess?

    C) All of your info?

Personally, I like this app better...
But, I have been switching between the app GPS status, and Google Maps.
This will help SOOOOO much more! lol.
Yes, I agree with the switching to sat. veiw, but again, it really wasn't working there, so i didn't try to zoom in on my location or anything. lol.

My wife has the HTC Eris. Its a nice phone but I still prefer my Droid. As long as you like it, thats all that matters. Its still an Android. :D

By the way Swype is another killer app.
