What is the best running shoe? I would like to start running and getting back in shape but the current shoes I have are very uncomfortable and I need new ones.

    Thanks for the input!

    Hmmm....

This is too broad for me to just narrow it down with what you have given me.

I personally, like the minimalist approach. So I run either barefoot, in my Vibram 5 fingers, or racing flats. But you need experience in running before you could run any amount of mileage with that.

Best advice, find a local running store, and I don't mean a Nike outlet or Finish Line, I mean a dedicated running store where they can do a basic foot gate analysis and find the best shoe for you. It might be expensive, but if you don't have great running form, it will be best for you.

You might want to check out roadrunnersports.com. They have a online deal called 'shoe dog' that asks you questions and determines what shoes would probably be best. You used to be able to send them your used shoes and they'd look at the wear pattern and tell you if you needed a certain type of shoe.

I'm a flat footed, over pronator. Having the right shoe really makes a difference in comfort and knee pain.

Your best bet is to go into a store and get properly fitted. I have had many brands and some work and others don't. But all of them that I have had properly fit for me have by far been the best ones.

On that note. I am a big fan of the Newton's. Great shoes if they fit you properly. Designed to help you run properly. Little awkward at first but you get used to them.

I don't think new runner's are ready for Newtons. Especially since they will be paying $180 for a shoe that will more than likely feel horribly awkward to run in.

That is true but if you are a new runner it isn't a bad way to get into running and you start off with a proper stride. But that price tag does sting I will admit!

They actually make one now that is an into shoe. It is designed to be worn first to get the feel of the shoe then you can progress to the regular shoe.

I just started running again about 3 months ago. I ran on crap shoes up until a few days ago. My father sent me some New Balance 1063's the other day. Man they felt like a dream compared to my old shoes. Highly recommend them.

OK - something I can answer...

    Depends!

I am a big guy - and running is tough on my knees since I am big (for Marine Corps standards). Over the years I have leaned towards the New Balance line of shoes.

In Virginia there is a chain of stores called Virginia Runner and they REALLY take the time to fit you for a pair of shoes. You bring your old ones in and orthotics you wear and they will try you out in shoes, watch you run in them, try another pair get your feedback etc. For as much running as I do, it paid off.

Try a few pairs on with GOOD SOCKS and see if you feel comfortable with no turning or pressure.

Will give you my contact info if you want to talk more - since PT is part of my job I have learned a great deal about running shoes over the last 20 years.

I would invest in a pair of asics. Comfortable and light running shoe.
