They come to their own OPINION and after they do whatever bow or broadhead they shoot is the POOP! The end
true that I have shot several diff heads in my 45 year bow hunting career and at the time whatever head I was shooting was the best......... at that time.... lol
the one thing that has always bothered me about Rage is their ad campaign, in one of their ads whatever celebrity they were using claims even in a marginal hit you will find your deer...that is sort of like saying instead of a 243 shoot a 300 win mag because it's a bigger bullet.. I don't think we should be focusing on marginal hits we should be practicing daily if possible to ensure a marginal hit does not happen if at all possible..
Reread my post. No where does it say I am trying to learn what is best! It says I like to see why people think their choice is best. I will continue to use what I feel is the best option for me, nothing in this post is going to sway me from what I like and use. My post was completely misunderstood.
"hearing what others prefer and why "broadens my horizons" about things I am so new to" Like I said.. listening to fan boys about this bow or that broadhead is comical at best. Its all just opinions and they are a dime a dozen. For me it doesnt "broaden" things much. Try this one and that one and when you find one that flies good for you and you feel comfortable shooting it... run with it. The only thing anyone has said that makes a huge difference in this thread is pick your shot placement and dont feel over confident because you are shooting xxx head. This thread is fixed vs mechanical and its pointless. No one will say anything about one that will change the opinion of anyone using the other. "Ohh gawd, he said mechanicals make a bigger hole! IM SWITCHING!!! Ohh gawd he said fixed are more reliable! IM SWITCHING!!!" lol Carry on!
I haven't had a deer go over 60 yards with my G5 Montecs. Like mentioned above, it all depends on arrow, speed, and preference. Here's the typical result I get out of them:
Was there a good blood trail with the montec..my buddy shot buck this yr n no blood.. but the deer didnt go far either..
I think like any broadhead it depends on if there was a pass-through and where the placement was. The deer above left a double red line, he was pouring from both sides but its heart exploded so it didn't have a chance to go far anyway.
I have used mechanicals and fixed blades..For me I lean towards using fixed Blade.."Innerloc Carbon Tuner" they fly great, get great penetration. Fixed blades forces me to not rush my shots, or take risky ones, knowing I do not have big cutting diameter..
I don't really trust them, I have shoot deer and black bears with rages when they first came out, on a black bear I shot the O ring didn't even break causing the blades to not deploy. Since then I stopped using them and can not bring myself to use them again, I'm sure the new models are better (without the o rings) in my opinion any BH will work with good shot placement, regardless if your shooting a fixed head with a 1" cut or a mech with a 2" cut. I would use a mechanical if I went turkey hunting, but not on any big game animal. Especially not on moose, elk and other bigger big game that's for sure. Good luck using a rage on one of them, hitting a rib will destroy your mechanical and you'll get far less penetration. A fixed head blows thru ribs and be perfect to re sharpen a fuse again. So my question to you is why use a mechanical you shoot once, have the blades get bent and be unable to use the BH again plus pay more money that you would for a fixed head. Cutting diameter doesn't matter one bit, it's all shot placement.
I also never cared for Rage because of the propoganda they spew. When they first came on scene, they talked about how their heads were different and cutting edge with the slip cam technology, etc. Well, that type of broadhead hit the market about 5 years prior to Rage's existence. Just rubbed me the wrong way. To me, their liked the Mathews bow of broadheads. Not much different then anyone elses offerings, just a whole lot more expensive. But hey... if Chuck, Lee, Tiffany, etc all endorse them (because they get em free), they have to be the best. No thanks.
As I said earlier in this thread I shot the KillZones this year and had great luck with them. That being said, I would rather shoot the G5 Montecs, and did the last two years, but I could never get them as sharp as I would like. Blessings. ..........Pastorjim
Have you tried the montec CS' ? When I used montecs for a couple of seasons I could get the cs' way sharper than the standard montecs. I think they cost a few bucks more but the carbon steels gave me a way sharper edge on the blades. If you really like the montecs, I'd suggest trying out the CS'.
Just an FYI, the O-ring doesn't break to release the blades. They are just there as a retainer. Sometimes the ring will wear and possibly break, and that's when you replace them, but just because the O-ring wasn't broken, doesn't mean it didn't open.
When a rage comes back out the hole it went in the blades fold back to the closed position leading some to believe the blades didn't open upon impact.
