I would be willing to bet smoking was not the cause of the heart attack, more than likely genetic, but certainly does not help. If you have a family history of health issues smoking certainly would be an unwise choice.

I quit snuff about 5 years ago. Hardest thing I ever did. I felt angry all the time when I quit, almost punched a waiter before he ever said a word. No reason for the anger but it was there. Its been 5 years and I still want it and even reach for it in my pocket sometimes. But I will never touch the stuff again.

You don't think smoking cigarettes for 30 straight years didn't cause his death?

I reached in my pocket for years for a cigarette after I quit. Once I realized they weren't there, I was fine.

If there had been a cig there, im sure I would have tried to light it up.

Part of the reason I say smoking is more of a habit than an addiction.

Unfortunately I know a couple people who have died of massive heart attacks at that age or younger that were not smokers, one was actually a health nut. While I do not think smoking helped, there are certainly some other factors that could have caused the death.

I quit smoking cold turkey this past Saturday. The girl I met who got me to sign up for the Tough Mudder is really pushing me to do more running events with her, and I want to live healthier as well. I've been smoking for too long and the hard work I've been putting into the gym I don't want to ruin with crappy lungs. I will NEVER smoke again!

41 year old guy I work with dropped dead of a massive heart attack this week. Didn't smoke and he did work out; but he had been dipping since he was a kid. No matter what form, nicotine causes/exacerbates high blood pressure, which is one of the main causes of heart disease. I almost failed a physical @ age 28 due to blood pressure- almost as soon as I quit Kodiak, mine went down 15/10 points. That was over 8 years ago, and has been stable ever since.

To this day, up in a tree stand or on the softball diamond I get the urge, but sunflower seeds or even mint snuff will do the trick. Be done with the can. It "can" be done.

I smoked until I was 41 (19 yrs ago) I quit because I wanted to get my wind back and it worked. My mother in law died from emphysema and it wasn't pretty. She was gasping like a fish out of water. Dragged that oxygen tank all over. She was 67. Started coughing and keeled over into the coffee table. I say just do it! Think of your health and all the toys you can buy with the money you save.

For what it's worth my doctor likes to say "sitting is the new smoking". She says people are just way less active these days and it's killing them.

I believe she's right. I've believed this for over 25 years.

You can see it when an older couple looses their mate. The one that sits around mourning and inactive usually melts down and dies before the ones that get back up on their feet again and remain active.

My daughter's best friend's dad just died yesterday morning at age 44. He had smoked for years until 5 years ago, when he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Did the treatments and we just held a 5-year cancer free party for him. Collapsed with a pulmonary embolism. Died with his wife and daughter sitting with him on the living room floor before EMS could get there.
