Responded to a 43 year old guy that died last night. He left behind a teenage daughter. It was a sad scene as the guy appeared to be physically strong and in pretty good shape. He had two Bibles open on the bed from which he collapsed. He knocked over a picture of him and his daughter on the night stand during an apparent massive heart attack.

The only thing the guy did that was unhealthy was smoke....two packs of cigarettes a day since he was a teenager.

    Just a thought.

Man that is so sad. Praying for his family now. It can happen to anyone. We have to make sure we take care of ourselves.

disgusting habits, Ive never smoked but basically everyone in my family does and its night a day the difference in how I can breath compared to them. Im about 40 pounds over weight and all my brothers are in pretty good shape and I run circles around them.

My ex's dad died from lung cancer. He smoked for 20 years. She didn't handle his death well at all and despite how much I tried to fix it, she pushed me away more and more till the relationship ended. I'll never judge anyone who smokes, but I can't help thinking about what the long term effects of their smoking has the potential to put their loved ones through.

There was a 44 year old guy here that ran almost every day. Lifted weights and eat right. He died from a massive heart attack while deer hunting. He didn't do anything unhealthy and was a fitness freak.

    Just a thought.

Yes it happens, but I like my odds better with not smoking or using any tobacco products.

Question is about the risk and value.

What value does smoking bring to your life? Is the risk worth it?

My sister-in-law's brother had a massive heart attack at age 35 and died. He never smoked.

I quit smoking a couple years back. I did start the old Copenhagen back a couple months ago after a night of boos. I put the can down again this week. It's hard an I want to set the earth on fire and punch everyone in the throat about oh, 500 times a day right now but, in a week I'll be fine. May be friendless and divorced but, ill be fine.

In this crazy society of late... they keep me calm.

Seriously my job will probably kill me before smoking does.

    Chemicals from spraying.

Being a grease monkey handling oil, grease, gas and diesel.

Exhaust from working on or with all the equipment.

Molds, fungus and dust from handling grain.

    Working in a dangerous environment.

Working with electricity, big equipment, heights, animals and careless people.

Spending way too much time in the sun.

Granted things are much safer now but back when I started they weren't.

I have no doubt in my mind I am a walking time bomb... I just am not so sure smoking will be my demise. I am not going to worry about it.

I made the decision I waa finished with cigarettes back in 1996. My daughter was about to turn 2 and I couldn't think of a better reason to quit. I never "tried" I just did it. Saying your trying is setting yourself up for failure. Just do it.

My daughter is 19 now and has never seen me smoke:)

My wife works in surgery(heart) and will tell you the 2 main reasons patients are on the table are weight #1 and smoking #2. She says you can tell who the smokers are when they get cut in to. She says you can smell it permiate from their bodies when they are cut into.

I quit five years ago and it has been one of the best things I have done. My health has improved tremendously. My wife works for an oncologist and tells me all kinds of stories about people whom couldn't quit and it is all the motivation I need to stay away.
