I am part of lease for a hunting property that we have done a lot of work on. It now has 5 food plots mostly clover and brasscus mix. The issue is that they are located in a spot with trees that are unable to have stands in them. I was wondering if it would be better to place a ground blind on the edge or hunt a 100 or so yards back from the plot in trees that I can put a stand in.
Hunt where you think the best spot is. Don't let the lack of a tree stop you. If your going to build ground blinds be sure to build them so they will give you very good concealment. If you do it right now you can build some pretty elaberate blinds out of natural materials and the deer will be used to it before season arrives. Also be sure to have multiple spots set up to take the wind into consideration. Wind direction is even more important when hunting on the ground because your scent will not float over top of the deer like it often dose in a tree. This will also make it easier not to over hunt a particular spot. If you really want to have a tree stand in a spot you can get some 20' 6"x6" treated timbers and cement them into the ground. Paint them with some exterior house paint and let them bake in the sun for a few weeks first to get rid of the paint smell. Or you could go Texas style and use a tripod. There is always a way. It's just not always an easy one.
