Hey guys.. I've got a quick question about food plots and Round Up usage.

We sprayed a new location for a fall food plot with Round Up lats Friday or Saturday (my dad did the spraying and I honestly can't remember which day it was). Either way, after checking the 10 day forecast on Wednesday it was calling for showers tuesday, wednesday and thursday so my brother and I went ahead and seeded the food plot on Tuesday hoping to get some good rain on the plot to get it off and running.

My dad posed the question today, and I don't even know if it's a real concern but it got me a bit worried. Did we plant to soon after spraying the Round Up? Will the round up retard the seeds germination and its growth overall? I would think not as Round Up is a glyphosphate and it kills grass and weeds by attaching to the leaves and preventing photosyntesis, but if anyone could give me a definite answer or a little more information I could either breathe a sigh of relief, or go buy more seed!

i sprayed my late plots on the 12th and planted them on the 19th.... round up is a contact killer..... it only kills the plant leaves it comes in contact with.... if it rains your in the clear 3 days later.... if not i would wait 7 days ..... once inside the plant it usally takes 7 to 10 days to kill it completly.... so i alwasy wait 7 days just to let it break down the dead plants ..... it has never harmed my new growth

Thanks for the information.. I'm still not sure as to whether or not it can harm the seed though?

I think I'm going to be e-mailing the folks at the Whitetail Institute in the morning, this is worrying me sick! As you know, food plotting isn't a cheap business.

Round Up will not harm your seeds in any way or retard their germination. You can spray it right on seeds and they will still germinate. RU is absorbed thru growing vegetation and transfered to the roots killing the plant.

    No worries, get some sleep!!;)

No Problem. Everything should be fine. I planted a couple spots this year 3 days after spraying and the plots look Great. Alfalfa - Turnips.
