First post and am new to the forum so here goes...I have recently aquired a new lease of hunting ground where I live in Illinois and am toying with the idea of planting food plots. I am under the gun this year for any major planting or ground work but have a few small areas that I would like to do a little work and see if I have any luck. I am thinking of doing what I can by hand and throwing some seed out manualy so my question is this; is it to late to do anything or do I still have time to grow some vegetation? If anybody knows what my options are this late in the planting season let me know and Thanks!!!

Eh, it's a little late in the year for that. You could try it but depending on the weather in your area you'll probably get mixed results. Personally, if I were you I would just do hard core scouting this year and learn the lay of the land and then really get things going next year when you have more time.

Where you located in Ill.? I would say it's to late but never hurts to try. I would go with winter wheat or some kind of rye possibly, maybe oats.

I live in central Illinois. Its been pretty warm and remains that way for the next week or so with a few chances of rain and was just gonna try it out with some throw and grow. I have pretty much already come to the conclusion that this first year is going to be a "scout and learn" year.

I was able to acquire the property the day before I had to leave for Ft Dix and was gone pretty much the whole month of September and returned the first week of October...didn't give me much time but oh well...my father and I have harvested a doe so far and that's a pretty good start. Thanks for the advice fellas!

I think Turnips would be a great try. you just rake up an area and throw them out. then rake over them again.

I was thinking about some turnips along with maybe some brasicus(sp) mix...not planning on spending a bunch of time on it just toying with it.

Check out The Whitetail Institute website. They sell seed but have a pretty good site for info too. Has what to plant and when, and also where in the country with timetables. Good luck!
